  5. Fire service says exploding e-cigarette 'very unusual'published at 17:31

    Shropshire's fire and rescue service says it's never heard of an e-cigarette exploding before and it's going to contact colleagues around the country to see if they've ever dealt with one.

    A man in Telford was taken to hospital this lunchtime, suffering burns to his face, neck and hands, when one blew up in his hands.

    The fire service said it might get in touch with the manufacturers, to see what might have gone wrong, but wants to see if this was a one-off first.

    Employment Minister Priti Patel has welcomed the news that fewer people in the West Midlands are out of work, according to the latest official figures.  

    The Office for National Statistics, external said the number of people out of work in the region fell by 8,000 to 157,000 between September and November.

    The New Saints will play in retro blue shirts in Saturday's Welsh League Cup final against Denbigh.

    It's the start of a period celebrating the club's links with the old Oswestry Town, leading to an Oswestry reunion event at the end of next month.

    TNS moved from Llansantffraid to Oswestry after the merger of the two sides in 2003, with UEFA approval that a club actually based on English soil could represent Wales in European football.

  10. Experimental aircraft going on display at air showpublished at 16:22

    The organisers of the RAF Cosford Air Show have announced the latest additions to this year's line-up - three experimental aircraft.

    The Bristol 188, Fairey Delta II and Avro 707 (which is currently stored in a hangar, out of public view) were all built in the 1950's and 1960's as Britain was developing jet aircraft.

    The air show is due to take place on 19 June.

  11. Telford teenager's England call-uppublished at 15:50

    A Telford teenager's been called up for the England Under-18s football squad.

    Joe Thomas, who goes to Thomas Telford School and plays for Stafford Rangers, has been chosen for the Centenary Shield side.

    It'll face Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland over the next few weeks.

    Monty the cat is lucky to be alive, external after being caught in an illegal snare. The seven-year-old went missing for three days before making his way home in Broseley.

  13. The man behind the redevelopment of Shrewsbury's jailpublished at 15:20

    Detailed plans for a big revamp of Shrewsbury's former prison, including turning some into flats, are due to be made public soon - but who is the man behind them?

    Trevor Osborne, set up the Trevor Osborne property group in 1973 and specialises in redeveloping historic buildings, like Oxford's former jail (which now contains a hotel).

    The Ministry of Justice closed the Dana prison in 2013 and Trevor Osborne bought the building last June. He also owns buildings like the Guildhall in Bristol, Armagh Gaol in Northern Ireland and parts of Porthleven Harbour in Cornwall.

    Good news from Dawley's GP practice; appointments are going ahead as planned this afternoon, despite the power cut earlier.

    It knocked out their phones and computers earlier, but it all should be working again later this afternoon and staff say they've not been forced to close in the meantime.

    The orthopaedic hospital at Gobowen has appointed a new chief executive.

    Mark Brandreth will be leaving the Countess of Chester Hospital to take on the role.

    The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt hospital is being investigated by the health watchdog, Monitor, because of long waiting times and concerns about the accuracy of its performance figures.

    And earlier in the month it emerged that hundreds of patients appointment had been delayed by mistake.

    A man who died in a crash on the A49 near Whitchurch has been named, external by police.

    Cheshire Police say 32-year-old Andrew Beddows from Nantwich was driving a BMW which left the road on Thursday night and hit a tree near Bradley Green - he died at the scene.
