    A dig last year found evidence of a presence on the site before the Norman invasion of 1066.

    A team will excavate a trench on the grassed slope of the western rampart under social distancing guidelines.

    The council said visitors will be able to see the team working and ask questions, from a safe distance.

    The dig is expected to start at the beginning of September.

    An outdoor theatre venue is being built in the grounds of a country house to host live performances under Covid-19 social distancing rules.

    Due to the pandemic, virtually all theatres have been closed for five months with no certainty about when they will be able to reopen fully.

    Farmer Tim Ashton is building the outdoor amphitheatre on land at Soulton Hall, near Wem, Shropshire, out of soil.

    He told the BBC he was confident the structure would be ready for use next month with up to 80 people in the audience.

    "On the right day, it will be fabulous. On a more challenging day, there will be a bit of fortitude required from the audience but if we don't do this there won't be any performances."

    An Asda supermarket has reopened today after torrential rain forced it to close early last night.

    Videos shared on Twitter by Telford Live , externalshowed water coming in through the roof of the Donnington Wood branch.

    A spokesperson for the supermarket said the store was closed to make it safe but opened as usual this morning.

    The owners of the Beacon Pub, on Market Street, posted on Facebook last night , externalthey had suffered a "major leak in the roof" and were closed until further notice.

    This morning, assessing the damage, , externalthey added a small part of the ceiling fell in and all their carpets had been damaged.

    The Facebook post added: "When will 2020 end?!"

    More than 100 calls were made to Shropshire's fire service in two hours last night as heavy rain swept the county.

    The service said, external even its fire station in Wellington was flooded.

    Simon Hardiman, the service's assistant Chief Fire Officer, said crews were pushed to the limit.

    "Trees down, sinkholes, mud on the road, impassable roads. We did actually go to some structural damage caused by water entering properties."

    Flooding from the heavy rain has left several businesses damaged or closed today in Telford.

    The town appeared to be one of the worst hit areas in the West Midlands as storms swept across the county yesterday evening.

    The Beacon pub posted on Facebook , externalit had had a "major leak in the roof" which had caused serious damage and it would be closed until further notice.

    The Hop and Vine, on Hadley High Street, said , externalit was also shut due to the evening's storm.

    On Twitter, there are also videos circulating claiming to show flooding inside the Asda store in Donnington, Telford, , externaland in one of the town's McDonald's. , external

    Both firms have been approached by the BBC for comment.

    The heavy rain last night has left the River Severn in Shrewsbury running high and fast, the Environment Agency's said.

    Several roads in and around Telford remain shut this morning due to flooding.

    Telford and Wrekin Council said, external heavy rain last night had caused "significant issues".

    It tweeted four roads were still shut:

    • Hadley Road Oakengates
    • Chetwynd Road, Newport
    • B4394 (Allscott) Blacksmiths Lane to rail bridge
    • Boughey Road – in vicinity of Gravelly Drive

    A man's suffered serious injuries after reportedly falling from a first-floor window this morning.

    Butcher Row, Shrewsbury,, external was closed by police after paramedics including the air ambulance were called to the scene.

    The ambulance service said the man was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for more treatment.
