    Telford Tiger's double-winning club captain Jason Silverthorn has signed up for another season.

    He's led the side since arriving from Hull in 2014 and was their joint top scorer last season with 33 goals.

    He said he'd been left frustrated at the early end to last season, because it meant they couldn't chase the treble.

    But he said he felt motivated by the task of defending their league and cup trophies next season.

    A pub in Shrewsbury has closed after one of its customers tested positive for Covid-19.

    The Boathouse Inn said on social media the customer visited on 8 August.

    The pub's closed so it can be deep cleaned and the management said they were waiting for more information from NHS Test and Trace.

    Lightning struck several buildings in Market Drayton last night, Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service said.

    A fire was started at a property in Croft Way, external and there were also strikes in Norton in Hales, external between 23:00 and midnight.

    Torrential rain caused flooding in the town with fire crews called to the Iceland store on Cheshire Street, external and on School Lane, external.

  4. Woman dies in Shropshire crashpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 11 August 2020

    A woman has died after her car came off the road in Telford this morning.

    It happened at the junction of River Lane and the A442.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said it appeared no other vehicle was involved.

  5. Storms build as lightning reportedpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 10 August 2020

    Storms look to be building around south Shropshire and north Worcestershire, with reports of lightning strikes near Bridgnorth and Kidderminster.

    Several flood alerts are in place, external across Birmingham and the Black Country, as well as parts of Warwickshire and south Staffordshire.

    The removal of non-elite athletes from this year's London Marathon is a big blow, a charity has said.

    The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt (RJAH) Orthopaedic Hospital Charitable Fund, based in Gobowen, Shropshire, said it would normally expect extra income of up to £50,000 from runners taking part in its name.

    The 2020 event will see reduced fields of 30-40 athletes compete for the elite men's, women's and wheelchair titles on 4 October.

    Victoria Sugden from the fundraising team at RJAH said staff understand the decision but it's still a disappointment.

    "It's really hard but firstly we just thank our runners for their patience and their commitments to the marathon this year. It's the right decision but very much a blow as far as they're concerned and for us as well."

    Two owners of soft play centres in the West Midlands say it is "heartbreaking" they are still closed and "really worrying" they have no idea when they will be allowed to reopen.

    More than 13,000 people have signed a petition on Parliament's website calling for more financial support for the industry.

    Sian Flower owns Monkey Mayhem in Kidderminster and says it's been closed for five months, but regular customers have been supportive.

    "It's been so tough because to phone up to say we've got to cancel the parties - the children don't understand and it's heartbreaking. But so many of the customers have been lovely and a few have said 'please, keep the money'."

    Jungleland in Trench Lock, Telford, also remains closed and owner Belinda Griffiths says it doesn't qualify for government grants and has staff on furlough until October.

    "It's really worrying, there is no solution. There's no clarity from the government saying what is going to happen from October. What's going to happen, how much longer can we remain closed?"

    Prime Minister Boris Johnson said last month: "Soft play areas will sadly need to remain closed for now - although this will be kept under review."

    The chairman of an NHS trust running two under-fire hospitals is stepping down as senior NHS officials from Birmingham are drafted in to try and turn it around.

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is at the centre of an independent inquiry into maternity care which is examining hundreds of cases dating back more than 40 years.

    It has also been in special measures since November 2018 and its accident and emergency department is regularly among the worst in England in terms of waiting times.

    In response, the trust says, external the NHS has created an "Improvement Alliance" which will see experts from Birmingham work with management in Shropshire to tackle issues around clinical care.

    At the same time, it says chairman Ben Reid, who has been in position since 2018, has decided to go. He will be replaced by a new chair, Dr Catriona McMahon, a director from University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

    Part of the Severn Valley Railway has been saved from a "catastrophic" position, it said.

    The heritage line said a landslip on its route between Highley and Bridgnorth needed urgent work to drain rainwater away.

    Without the work, a spokesperson said it would probably have had to stop running passenger trains on the route over winter, hitting its finances.

    The railway's charitable trust is funding £120,000 for the scheme.

    People living in the south Shropshire village Of Bromfield, which is set to lose its post office, are being told they could get a mobile van to deliver some of the services.

    The Post Office said it was due to close at the end of the month because the person in charge has resigned and because the owner of the property, Plymouth Estates, is withdrawing it from Post Office use.

    Plymouth Estates said it couldn't continue the post office, because it had been making "significant losses", made worse by coronavirus.

    The chairman of Bromfield Parish Council, Andy Boddington, said he'd like to see it moved to the first floor of the Ludlow Food Centre next door, where it would see more visitors.

    But the Post Office said it would not fund the move.

    Cannabis plants with a street value of about £1.3m have been uncovered at a former Indian restaurant near Whitchurch in Shropshire.

    West Mercia Police said a search was carried out at the Taj Mahal Spice building at Oakvale in Prees Heath yesterday.

  16. Flower show preparing to take fireworks onlinepublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 4 August 2020

    The Shrewsbury Flower Show firework display is going online this year, because of the coronavirus.

    Thousands of people buy tickets to watch it in the Quarry every year, and many more watch it from their homes around the town, but instead this month, footage of the 2019 display will be shown online.

    This year's flower show would have been the 133rd, but online viewers are being promised some "really interesting videos" around 14 and 15 August to replace the garden tours, cooking displays and live music.

    A church bell could soon be ringing out again after being repaired.

    The work on the so-called Great Bell of Tong of St Bartholomew's Church was held up by the coronavirus pandemic.

    The bell was removed and placed on the nave but the repair firm, Taylor Bells, had to wait for the lockdown to end before collecting it.

    The work involved replacing an old wooden headstock the bell sits on with a cast iron one.

    Minister-in charge, the Reverend Pippa Thorneycroft, told the BBC at the weekend Taylor Bells was expecting to return the bell on Tuesday.
