    The high street in Bridgnorth will close to traffic on Saturday because of concerns there isn't enough space for social distancing when the market is on.

    The town has been attracting large numbers of people on Saturdays.

    The street will shut between 05:00 and 15:00 and the town's mayor said the closure decision would be reviewed after the weekend.

    A brewer says his industry is going to take some time to recover, despite the reopening of pubs after the coronavirus lockdown.

    Shane Parr, who runs Oswestry's Stonehouse Brewery, said: "Even though pubs this side of the border in England are allowed to be open now, we're finding a lot of them are choosing not to and even those that are, they're not as busy."

    Mr Parr said his brewery was back up to producing about half of his pre-Covid quantity of beer, but feels people are still wary of returning to public places.

    "It's going to be a hard road for everyone going forward I think," he said.

    A bridge in north east Shropshire that was damaged by the winter floods will close for 12 weeks for repairs, starting from Monday.

    Temporary repairs were made to keep Ercall Mill Bridge open after the River Roden burst its banks, but now permanent work is needed.

    The restoration work will cut off the B5062 between Roden and High Ercall until October.

    Despite repeated flooding that saw parts of Ironbridge evacuated in February, one councillor has said she doesn't expect to see much government funding.

    Carolyn Healy, who sits on Telford and Wrekin Council, told the parish council early indications suggested the "bulk" of the £36m funding seemed to be heading to Bewdley and Shrewsbury.

    The worst flooding happened in February and at the time the Environment Agency said the temporary barriers were "ineffective", due to the volume of water.

    Last month, one cafe owner said his business had been flooded four times in a six-month period.

    Ms Healy said decisions on improving flood defences in Ironbridge would have to wait until more is know about the funding.

  8. Woman suffers 'multiple injuries' in dog attackpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

    A woman has been flown to hospital with "multiple injuries" after she was attacked by a dog in Oswestry last night.

    West Mercia Police said it was called to Cabin Lane at around 17:40 and she needed treatment for wounds to her face and arms.

    The rottweiler dog was seized by officers and an investigation is under way.

    GKN owner Melrose has warned that because of difficult trading conditions, job losses are likely.

    GKN makes parts for aircraft and the automotive sectors and has its headquarters in Redditch and a factory in Telford.

    In a statement, external, Melrose said sales across its group of businesses had fallen between March and June, but had started to improve following lockdown.

    But it said aerospace sales were expected to remain low into next year.

    A quarry near Shrewsbury could be expanded to allow another three million tonnes of sand and gravel to be extracted over the next 15 years.

    Hanson Quarry Products Europe Ltd, which operates Condover Quarry, has applied to dig up a 22-hectare field to the south of the existing site and Shropshire councillors will discuss the proposals next Tuesday.

    The company says if it is turned down, one of its dormant sites at Sleap Airfield or Cound Quarry may have to be reactivated instead.

  12. Hospitals report no Covid cases for first time since Marchpublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 21 July 2020

    For the first time since March, Shropshire's four community hospitals have said they're not treating a single Covid-19 patient.

    The hospitals in Bridgnorth, Bishop's Castle, Ludlow and Whitchurch described it as a "positive step".

    The hospitals have warned, however, that they don't expect it to last and they're likely to see Covid-19 patients again in the weeks ahead.

    A defibrillator has been stolen from a Worcestershire village.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said the theft of the equipment from a phone box in Shatterford was "abhorrent".

    Newport Rugby Club has signed the fomer captain of Fiji, Akapusi Quera.

    The 36-year-old was capped 64 times by his country and was their captain at the 2015 World Cup.

    Libraries in Shrewsbury, Oswestry (pictured) and Ludlow have reopened their doors today.

    Other libraries across the Shropshire Council area will follow, external in the coming weeks with a number of libraries in Telford & Wrekin already open.

    A click and collect book service, rolled out by Shropshire Council at some libraries earlier this month, will be available to other sites from today as well.

    They include Bishop’s Castle, Market Drayton and Shifnal as those sites will stay shut until 3 August.
