    Telford Tigers have announced their first signing for the new season - forward Brandon Whistle.

    He scored 69 points for the double-winners after joining them mid-way through the season, including vital goals in their cup run.

    Tom Watkins, the Tigers head coach and general manager, said he had "showed his ability in the key games towards the end of the season."

    "He turned it up in the big occasions and played without fear when we had a lot to play for."

    There's been no further increase in the number of coronavirus cases at a travellers site in Craven Arms.

    The number of people to have tested positive at the site on Long Lane remains at 23.

    A bridge which carries traffic from the A5 to the orthopaedic hospital near Gobowen will be closed for repairs from next Monday.

    Twmpath Bridge will stay open for pedestrians and cyclists but cars and lorries will have to take a detour, through either Whittington or Gobowen.

    The repairs are due to take a fortnight to complete.

  5. Town to get £500,000 to improve street safetypublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 28 July 2020

    Part of Telford is being given more than £500,000 by the government to improve street safety.

    The Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia, John Campion, bid for the funding and said it would be spent in the Brookside area.

    The money will be used by the police and the council to improve street lighting, CCTV and introduce a neighbourhood watch scheme.

    The Severn Valley Railway is due to reopen this weekend after four months of being shutdown.

    The railway has been losing around half a million pounds a month since its closure in March.

    Passengers will be asked to book ahead of time and to note that the company is running a reduced service to begin with.

    General manager Helen Smith said: "Once we get to September we hope to move back to more of a normal service, but this just gets us up and running again."

    Two men have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, external after a man was dragged from his vehicle and stabbed in Telford.

    West Mercia Police said the victim, in his 30s, was attacked on the Bembridge footpath in the Brookside area on Thursday evening.

    He was taken to hospital where his injuries were described as not being life-threatening.

    The two men, aged 26 and 27, from Telford, were remanded in custody.

    People living in a town have told BBC Shropshire they are worried in case an outbreak of coronavirus at a travellers' caravan park spreads into the local community.

    On Sunday, Shropshire Council said 21 people at the Craven Arms site had tested positive and it was linked to an outbreak in Welshpool and a recent local event.

    They set up a testing site and told all residents to self-isolate with their families.

    Karen Broxton lives in Craven Arms and said she was nervous, especially as her son works in the garage next to the site.

    "He was my number one thought when I heard there was an outbreak up there, my immediate thought was Adam at the garage because that's their first port of call for a shop and I know they go in there quite regularly."

    Local MP Philip Dunne told BBC Shropshire the outbreak was "very concerning" but he hoped it would be contained.

    "The residents are co-operating fully with Shropshire Council, Public Health England and they're engaged in contact test and tracing and therefore one hopes this won't spread into the wider population."

    The number of positive coronavirus cases at a caravan park site in Shropshire is expected to rise, health expects have warned.

    On Sunday, Shropshire Council said , external21 people had tested positive at Craven Arms following an initial two positive cases last week.

    A testing site has been set up at a nearby business park and those living on the park have been told to self-isolate with their families.

    A playground and outdoor gym on nearby Newington Way has been temporarily closed to help stop transmission, and the council said it had been arranging the delivery of food, prescriptions and essential supplies for residents.

    Windrush campaigner Paulette Wilson turned anger over her treatment by the government into energy to help others, a friend has said.

    She died aged 64 on Thursday morning, her daughter Natalie Barnes confirmed.

    Ms Wilson arrived in Telford from Jamaica in 1968 aged 10 - but in August 2015 her benefits were stopped and was later sent to a detention centre.

    Bishop Desmond Jadoo said "many people would have been ever so bitter... but she still had a smile on her face and she just kept going.

    "I'll remember Paulette with her smile, her grace, and her humility, but most of all her zeal to fight for justice."

    A struggling hospital trust at the centre of the largest ever review of maternity care in the NHS needs to get back to the "fundamentals of care", its medical director has said.

    Earlier this week, an investigation into maternity care at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SATH) revealed it was now examining nearly 1,900 cases.

    While a few days before, the chief inspector of hospitals said the organisation was "normalising poor care" across departments.

    SATH said it was working with NHS partners over improvements and medical director Arne Rose told BBC Shropshire it needed the extra support.

    "We do need help and we are welcoming to the help that arrives for us, organised by NHS England and by other people."

    He added mangers needed to recognise issues before external inspections did, and one example was getting matrons back on the ward so "we can recognise and tackle any issues with basic care as we find them".

    Testing started when two positive cases were found at the site near Craven Arms, Shropshire Council and Public Health England said.

    The figure rose to three and officials said all were being linked to an outbreak in Welshpool , externaland a recent local event.

    A new testing site will be running in Craven Arms from tomorrow and food and other supplies are being taken to the carvavan site for residents while they self-isolate.

    A new inquiry into the safety of maternity services in England has been launched today by a group of MPs.

    The Health and Social Care Committee said, external it would build on investigations into concerns at NHS trusts including the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust.

    Earlier this week, it was revealed the probe into the Shropshire trust was examining nearly 1,900 cases, the vast majority since the year 2000.

    In the new inquiry, which will be accepting evidence until 4 September, MPs will consider what actions need to be taken to improve maternity safety at all hospitals.

    It'll also look at the extent to which a “blame culture” affects decision-making and whether litigation and clinical negligence processes need to change.

    The number of people testing positive for coronavirus in Sandwell has risen again, according to new figures.

    The data from Public Health England shows there were 86 new cases in the week up to 20 July. Figures for the seven days to 19 July showed 76 cases.

    That means 26.3 people tested positive for every for every 100,000 population (up to 20 July), up from 12.2 a week earlier.

    Dr Lisa McNally, the Director of Public Health for Sandwell, said on Monday it hadn't yet reached the stage where a local lockdown was needed, but she was monitoring the rise.
