    "Radical" proposals have been put forward to limit the number of tourists gathering in Ironbridge, Shropshire.

    Telford and Wrekin Council said it was seeing increasing numbers of visitors, with lockdown being eased, and fast action was needed.

    The closure of The Square car park next to the bridge, the removal of on-street parking and the closure of The Wharfage, Tontine Hill and High Street have all been proposed.

    The parish council said there could also be signs to tell motorcyclists not to gather by the Iron Bridge itself.

  2. Preparations to reopen flower gardenpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 20 May 2020

    A one-way system is being set up for the Dingle flower garden in Shrewsbury's Quarry park, so people can safely visit this summer.

    The town council hopes to reopen the Dingle in a few weeks and also plans to prevent people sitting on benches.

    Town clerk Helen Ball said she hoped to have everything ready after the summer bedding had been planted, but the splash park and play areas would have to remain closed for the time being.

    A travelling show has asked for permission to set up a permanent base in Oswestry.

    It wants to build a house and storage for fairground equipment at the former household recycling centre on Glovers Meadow.

    There have been 15 letters of objections, but a report due to go before Shropshire councillors later this month recommends that permission is granted.

    Derwen College in Shropshire has been given permission to set up a new campus at the site of a former business in Telford.

    The special needs college, which teaches students aged between 16 and 25, aims to open its doors at Nationwide House on Stafford Park in the autumn.

    Derwen's main campus is at Gobowen in Shropshire and it has two other satellite sites in the county at Craven Arms and Walford near Baschurch.

    A drive-through coronavirus test centre's being replaced with a home visiting service as just three people a day have been using the facility.

    It was opened at the International Centre in Telford last month , externalsoon after an assessment centre launched at Shrewsbury Town Football Club.

    Both sites required patients to be referred by GPs.

    Health bosses said , externalpeople who were housebound or unable to travel would now be assessed for coronavirus in their own homes.

    The drive-through facility will remain at Shrewsbury Town while the Telford one is to close on 29 May.

    Severn Trent Water is to reopen some of its smaller visitor sites from Wednesday after they were closed to keep people safe during the coronavirus crisis.

    The Coventry-based company said these would include sites in Shustoke near Birmingham, Trimpley in Worcestershire and Priorslee in Telford.

    Playgrounds will remain shut and the number of toilets available will be reduced, it said.

    It's hoped larger sites, including Draycote Water in Warwickshire, will reopen in June, it added.

    Dozens of people who gathered in a park for a "rave" despite lockdown rules should have faced tougher penalties, according to the leader of the local council.

    West Mercia Police said a DJ had set up for the party at Granville Country Park in Telford, Shropshire, on Saturday.

    Police dispersed the group from the Donnington park and officers said they "do not fine unless there is no other action open".

    But Telford and Wrekin Council leader Shaun Davies told BBC Shropshire he thought not fining them "sent the wrong message".

    "You would have to be a complete idiot to think that was the right thing to do in these circumstances. They put themselves at risk, their friends and families at risk and public services at risk by doing what they did," he said.

    A Telford mosque has been given permission to install mortuary equipment so that it can carry out pre-funeral rituals.

    The Shropshire Islamic Foundation plans to convert what is currently a warehouse at the town's Central Mosque in Wellington.

    The changes will allow family members to wash the body, place a shroud around it and pray with the deceased ahead of the funeral, in line with Islamic tradition.

    The planning application also said: “There will be no embalming, autopsies or similar procedures carried out on the premises.”

    Rail passengers have been urged not to turn up at stations without an advance ticket and to wear face coverings when they travel on the West Coast Mainline.

    Avanti West Coast made the announcement as part of new social distancing on its services between Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds.

    Passengers might be refused travel if the guidelines are not followed.

    Shops onboard Voyager services, which travel between London and destinations such as Shrewsbury, Birmingham, Edinburgh and North Wales, will be closed with no food and drink available.

  19. Police officer wins raffle for £650,000 farmhousepublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 14 May 2020

    A 49-year-old police officer from Telford has won a grade two listed Shropshire farmhouse in a prize draw.

    Nigel and Jane Chalenor (pictured below) lived on Grafton Farm near Loppington for 18 years, but wanted to downsize and support good causes.

    Participants in the draw paid £2 a ticket for a chance of the prize. The property had been valued at up to £650,000, but the Chalenors wanted to follow the prize draw route to raise £100,000 above the market price so they could give 10% of ticket sales to the Severn Hospice.

    The winner, Alison Bellamy, is at work today and says she'd forgotten she entered the contest.

    The property comes fully furnished, with six bedrooms, a gym, hot tub and three acres of land.
