  2. Tree campaign update: Sheffield council 'have not received official court papers'published at 17:56 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    We've been hearing today that campaigners fighting the removal of trees in Sheffield have taken their battle to the High Court.

    They're requesting an urgent interim injunction to halt the felling of trees until there's been a judicial review of the contract between the city council and contractors Amey.

    Now the local authority have contacted the BBC to say: " We have not been served with official court papers but have been presented with a draft. 

    "We have not received formal notification of a potential claim as we should have done to allow us to understand what is actually being alleged. We are trying to speak to the claimant's solicitors."

  4. Tree campaign: Sheffield council responds to legal challengepublished at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    We've been hearing today that campaigners fighting the removal of trees in Sheffield have taken their battle to the High Court.

    They want a judicial review of the scheme which they claim has resulted in some healthy trees being cut down.

    Councillor Terry Fox, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport at Sheffield City Council, said "We are not removing 18,000 trees as the campaigners have been suggesting. We look after 36,000 street trees and will remove and replace around 14% (5,000)."

    This is a maintenance project and our street trees are better cared for and maintained than ever before. We are committed to protecting Sheffield’s green heritage for future generations."

    Home Office Minister James Brokenshire has been paying tribute to Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough MP Harry Harpham who has died after a short fight with cancer.

    Mr Brokenshire said the South Yorkshire politician was a "dedicated public servant".

    We've been talking today about the news that campaigners fighting the removal of trees in Sheffield have taken their battle to the High Court.

    The legal action is being paid for by crowdfunding.

    Protesters say since yesterday they've already collected £7,000 to help pay for the legal action.

    Campaigner Dave Dilner says there's been "overwhelming public support" for their latest move.

    He's requesting an urgent interim injunction to halt the felling of trees until there's been a judicial review of the contract between the City Council and contractors Amey.

  9. Concern growing for missing Rotherham teenagerspublished at 16:10 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    Police say they're growing increasingly concerned about a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl who have gone missing from Rotherham.

    Daisy Dale, who also goes by the name Britney Everitt, and Dillan Blower have not been seen for over two days and concerns are growing for their welfare. 

    Officers believe the teenagers are together and may be in Rotherham or Sheffield.

    Campaigners fighting the removal of trees in Sheffield have taken their battle to the High Court.

    They want a judicial review of the scheme which they claim has resulted in some healthy trees being cut down.

    They're also seeking an injunction to halt the scheme in the meantime. 

    The legal action's being paid for by crowdfunding - a bid for cash launched yesterday has already collected £7,000.

    There's been a book launch with a difference in Sheffield today.

    It's for a new book about the Romans and the authors are seven and eight-year-old children at St Catherine's Primary School.

    Teachers went ahead with the 100-page book to make sure children could see their learning "had a purpose to it".

    I've been speaking to some of the children at the school who told me what they know about the Romans....

    A book of condolence has been opened at Sheffield Town Hall following the death of Brightside and Hillsborough MP Harry Harpham.

    The council says the book of condolence will be in the Town Hall reception until the day after Mr Harpham's funeral. The flag on the town hall is also being flown at half mast.

    Sheffield City Council leader Julie Dore said: “It’s difficult to express in words how sad this news is. 

    "I feel privileged to have known and worked alongside Harry, he was not only a loyal colleague but a valued friend, who dedicated his life to fighting for what he believed in. My thoughts are with Gill and all of their family.”

    A 27-year-old Sheffield man has appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court charged with two counts of arson with intent to endanger life and one count of attempted arson.

    Joshua Leigh Moloney, of Mitchell Street, Netherthorpe has been remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday 2 March.

    On Tuesday, police were called at about 6am to reports of a fire in a high-rise block of flats in Mitchell Street.

    Between 7.30am and 8am that morning, officers were then called to another incident at a cafe in Broughton Lane, Carbrook.

    The global trade in bees is driving a pandemic that threatens hives and wild bees, scientists from the University of Sheffield have found.

    A deadly bee disease has spread worldwide through imports of infected honeybees, according to genetic evidence.

    Stricter controls are needed to protect bees from other emerging diseases, researchers report in Science, external journal.

    Co-researcher Prof Roger Butlin, of the University of Sheffield, said Deformed Wing Virus (DWV) was a major threat to honeybee populations across the world with the epidemic "driven by the trade and movement of honeybee colonies".

    I've been at Tinsley in Sheffield this morning watching as workers electrically stun hundreds of fish.

    The animals need to be moved out of the canal so four sets of lock gates can be replaced.

    The fish will be put back in the canal once the work is completed.

  20. Death of Harry Harpham: 'Genuinely working class MP... will be greatly missed'published at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    Tributes are continuing to be made to the MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, Harry Harpham, who has died at the age of 61.

    Alan Billings (pictured), the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "Harry, as a former miner at Clipstone Colliery, was one of that very rare breed, a genuinely working class MP.

    "He will be greatly missed by his many friends, both in the Labour Party and the city."
