When Harry Harpham stood up in Sheffield's Council Chamber your pen had to be ready.

Not everyone agreed with the content of his speeches, but the passion was undeniable.

    Harry Harpham MP addresses Parliament

It was forged through the miners' strike where he stood on a Nottinghamshire picket for a year and then tempered as he lived through some tough times in Sheffield in the 80s and 90s.

People in Darnall elected him to stick up for them on the council in 2004. He’d previously represented Manor. He did that while also handling David Blunkett's election campaigns and running his office.

After more than 10 years on the council he got his chance to succeed his friend as MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough. He took over 50% of the vote in 2015.

He was very proud to have represented people in Sheffield at Westminster and was working up until a couple of weeks before his death.

Only last month, he spoke in Parliament about steel industry, attacking the government over job losses at Forgemasters.

The journalists all had their pens ready.
