    Tonight will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain largely dying out and with clear spells developing later leading to some fog patches. Minimum temperature 5C (41F). 

    Tomorrow, any fog patches clearing then a generally brighter day expected with some sunny intervals, although scattered showers are possible with a top temperature of about 14C (57F).

    The Bishop of Sheffield, the Right Reverend Dr Steven Croft, is leaving South Yorkshire to become the Bishop of Oxford. 

    He has been in the role for seven years, during which time Sheffield Cathedral hosted the traditional Maundy Money ceremony (pictured) and the Diocese of Sheffield celebrated its centenary.

    An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to a 12-month community order for witness intimidation.

    Kaleem Ali, of Clough Road, Masborough, was found guilty of the offence last month.

    Rotherham Magistrates' Court heard how Ali approached a child sexual exploitation victim in Rotherham in March 2015.

    Ali’s father, Qurban Ali, was jailed in February for the sexual abuse of 15 young girls in Rotherham.

    Today, Ali was sentenced to a 12-month community order, a curfew between 19:00 and 07:00 for 12 weeks and was electronically tagged.

    Sheffield City Council plans to hold a civic reception in golfer David Willett's honour.

    They'll also award him a star on Sheffield’s famous "Legends" walk of fame alongside other remarkable sons and daughters of this great city from Sir Michael Palin, to Jessica Ennis-Hill and Helen Sharman.

  8. Man found guilty of sexually abusing girls in Sheffieldpublished at 16:39 British Summer Time 12 April 2016

    A Sheffield man's been found guilty of multiple sexual offences against vulnerable girls and women, external.   

    Owen Smith, 50, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on trial this week charged with five counts of rape, two counts of trafficking and two charges of sexual assault.

    He's been found guilty of five counts of rape, two charges of sexual assault and one count of trafficking.  

    The court heard how Smith, of Hawley Street, Sheffield, used his position as a mental health worker to gain the trust of his victims, who were vulnerable teenage girls and young women.

    Smith has been remanded in custody to be sentenced on Tuesday 10  May 2016.

    Police in Rotherham are asking for your help to trace, external missing 14-year-old Ethan Davies. Ethan, who lives in Barnsley, was reported missing at about 13:30 today after leaving the Magna Science Centre in Sheffield Road where he was on a school trip. 

    Police are becoming increasingly concerned for his welfare and are asking anyone who may have seen him or may know where he is to call police on 101.

    A book marking the 35th anniversary of the maiden flight of Space Shuttle Columbia was literally launched into space this morning - and from a park in Oughtibridge in Sheffield, no less!

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a 22-year-old Sheffield woman.

    The 37-year-old man, from the Colchester area, was arrested this afternoon after a murder investigation was launched.

    He has been remanded in custody where he will be questioned by detectives.

  13. South Yorkshire MP 'proud' of Stocksbridge connection to UK steel industrypublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 12 April 2016

    MPs are holding an emergency debate on the future of the steel industry following Tata Steel's decision to sell off its UK operations. 

    The Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, Angela Smith, has told the Commons that "every F1 car has a bit of Stocksbridge steel" in it.

    She's said she's proud of what's being done in the town, but she's appealed for government help.

    Reflecting on Danny Willett's triumph at The Masters, BBC golfing correspondent Iain Carter says his victory was "no fluke".

    While the wider sporting public can now wake up to the fact that the UK has a new golfing hero, those close to the game have been more than aware of the talents of the 28-year-old from Sheffield, he says.

    MPs are debating the future of the UK steel industry in the House of Commons.

    Today's debate follows the announcement that Tata Steel is beginning the formal process of selling its loss-making UK plants.

    Thousands of workers in England and Wales risk losing their jobs if a deal to buy the plants cannot be struck.

    Yesterday, it emerged that a deal has been signed to safeguard more than 4,000 jobs at Tata's steelworks at Scunthorpe.

    There's currently a debate on the future of the UK steel industry in the House of Commons.

    It follows the announcement that Tata Steel is beginning the formal process of selling its loss-making UK plants.

    Labour's Angela Eagle has called on her counterpart, Business Secretary Sajid Javid, to present "a comprehensive plan to secure the future of our vital steel industry" and accused the government of having "an ideologically-driven reluctance to get involved".

    "Such debates are rare but the situation now facing the steel industry cannot be categorised as anything other than an emergency," the Labour frontbencher says.

    Barnsley FC head coach Paul Heckingbottom has added his voice to those suggesting the Reds and Adam Hammill are a perfect match.

    The 28-year-old's future is unclear with his contract up in the summer, although both parties have expressed interest in an extended contract. 

    Heckingbottom says Hamill is enjoying a "love affair" with the club in his second spell.

    "The brand of football we're trying to play probably suits Adam. The fans appreciate that and like the way the club's trying to play. He's produced big moments...They love him to bits," says Heckingbottom.
