A senior judge has criticised an IVF clinic in Sheffield over a form-filling error which meant a man had to go to court to be legally declared the father of his child.

This latest judgement - one of 15 cases with similar mix-ups - involved a couple who had fertility treatment using sperm from an anonymous donor.

The High Court ruling says the clinic's mistake was that a tick went against the wrong piece of text on a crucial form.

The man said he felt "total devastation" and was "numb and shocked" when he was told his legal parentage was in doubt.

The president of the Family Division, Sir James Munby, criticised the clinic, CARE Sheffield, for what he called "seriously deficient" behaviour. He said they failed to give the couple the support they were entitled to look for, and delayed apologising to them.

Judgment is expected in six further cases, and it's thought as many as 85 couples could be affected in total.
