    Rotherham drugs courier Thomas Birkbeck jailed for total of 32 months after being chased by police at 150mph in North and West Yorkshire last month with three-year-old girl in his car.

  2. Thousands head to Sheffield as Doc/Fest beginspublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

    Sheffield Doc/Fest, external is kicking off today.

    Hundreds of documentaries will be shown over the next five days - with a host of famous names dropping into the city to give talks and workshops - including a first visit to the event by Sir David Attenborough.

    Film-maker Michael Moore, documentary maker and musician Professor Green and actress Joanna Lumley will also be attending.

    Doc/Fest welcomes over 30,000 documentary makers and lovers each year, including 3,500 industry delegates from over 60 countries.   

    Subjects in the films to be shown this year range from living on a diet of Miso soup, the life of a middle-aged widow and the autistic man who communicates through Disney films.

  3. Fire at industrial estate in Doncasterpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

    Four fire engines are currently tackling a fire at an industrial estate in Doncaster.

    Emergency services were called to the Kirk Sandall Industrial Estate off Sandall Lane just before 10:30.

    The Track Work Ltd industrial unit has been evacuated.

    Fire crews are using hose reels and foam to tackle the fire.

  4. Teaching union welcomes Barnsley council U-turn over school holidayspublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

    The National Union of Teachers (NUT) has welcomed today's news that Barnsley council has scrapped plans to shorten the school summer holidays next year.

    Ian Stevenson, the NUT Regional Secretary, said: "We look forward "to engaging with the consultation process set out by the council to take place in the forthcoming year, which will consider any future changes."

  5. Plans to change school holidays in Barnsley will not go ahead next yearpublished at 12:01 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

    More on Barnsley council's announcement that it has postponed plans, external to change the summer holidays next year.

    The local authority recently announced it would be shortening the summer holiday next year - claiming that pupils experienced a "learning loss" from a longer summer break.

    The move prompted criticism from some parents and teachers who said they had not been consulted properly about the change.

    Council cabinet spokesperson Tim Cheetham said today: “In response to concerns we have had about the consultation process and the change of position by some of our consulted partners, we now propose... that the school holiday arrangements for 2017/18 do not change, thereby leaving the longer summer holiday in place."

    However, the council has not ruled out a change in 2018.

    The invitation to hand out an award at the ceremony stemmed from a mix up over CD labels between crooner Bernie and death metal band Abhorrent Decimation.

    The band was hanging out with Bernie at the Kerrang awards in London last night billed as the "biggest party in the rock calendar" and took one of our favourite selfies of the year.

  9. Legals highs 'threaten stability' at Moorland Prisonpublished at 10:30 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

    Inspectors are warning the availability of so-called legal highs at a South Yorkshire prison is "severely threatening" the stability of the jail.

    A report into HMP Moorland said almost half of all prisoners claimed it was easier to get drugs compared to 28% at the last inspection.

    Inspectors said the availability of new psychoactive substances (NPS) was undermining recent progress.

  10. Motorcyclist dies after crash with car in Sheffieldpublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

    A 23-year-old man has died and a 32-year-old man suffered serious injuries after the motorcycle they were riding on was involved in a crash in Sheffield last night.

    They were travelling along the Wicker towards Saville Street in the city centre at about 20:30 when they were in collision with a blue Ford Focus at the junction with Derek Dooley Way.

    The 52-year-old woman driving the car suffered minor injuries.

  11. Tata Steel: Uncertainty over future leads to drop in apprenticespublished at 09:58 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

    Uncertainty over the future of Tata Steel has led to a drop in young people signing up for apprenticeship at the company's training centre in Stocksbridge. 

    The centre trains electrical and mechanical engineers. 

    They have stressed it's 'business as usual' and they're looking for more young people to sign up as apprentices to ensure there's a ready supply of engineers when steel begins to thrive again. 

    Darren Webster, who's been a steelworker for 28 years at Tata and is works convenor for the trade union Unite at Stocksbridge, says despite the recent uncertainty he thinks they have a good future....

  13. EU referendum: MP John Mann to vote for Brexitpublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

    Labour MP John Mann has told the BBC he will be voting to leave the European Union because of "free movement of labour, immigration and empowerment".

    Writing in the Sun,, external the MP for Bassetlaw said many Labour councillors would "shock" Westminster with their referendum vote.

    "Too few Labour MPs" were campaigning for Britain to leave the European Union via the 23 June vote, he added.

    Veteran Labour MP Dennis Skinner has confirmed that he too will vote for a Brexit.
