  1. Report on South Yorkshire Police; 'uncomfortable reading.'published at 12:33 British Summer Time 28 June 2016

    A report into South Yorkshire police says 'decision making has been isolated, staff have not been listened to and action has not always been taken on agreed plans'. 

    The report was ordered in May by Chief Constable Dave Jones and Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Billings and was done via the College of Policing’s Peer Support arrangements.

    It also says financial and operational planning have not been linked and there has been an under-investment in key areas, along with a disturbing move away, external from an effective neighbourhood policing model.

    A Sheffield organisation is helping to create a hundred jobs for adults with learning difficulties. The Burton Street Foundation, external's launching a major new programme today, which will involve the group working with local businesses to get more people with disabilities into employment. 

    Sheffield has one of the worst such employment rates in the country.

    Proposals to build a £35m retail park at the old Norton College site, external, off Bochum Parkway at Meadowhead, are being recommended for approval by council planning officers ahead of a Town Hall meeting today.

    It would be named the St James Retail Park and developers say it will be occupied by 'high-profile' national chains.

    Today Tala Lee Turton graduates from the Bolshoi ballet. It's a far cry from her home in Barnsley and she faced a major struggle to attend the prestigious organisation in Russia.

    The HS2 high-speed rail project has an "unrealistic timetable" and faces major cost pressures, a report by the National Audit Office has said.

    The £56bn programme has too ambitious a schedule and rising costs could mean that not all its intended benefits are delivered, the NAO said.

    The NAO said the 2026 target opening date for the first phase was "at risk, despite good progress".

    Good news; daredevil Peter Foster from Rotherham has completed the challenge of strapping himself to the top wing of a vintage biplane to be swept through the skies at speeds of up to 135mph for the Alzheimer's Society.

    Peter says he was inspired to do the feat because the disease affected his wife.

  9. South Yorkshire road deaths almost doublepublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 28 June 2016

    The number of people dying on South Yorkshire's roads has risen significantly.

    The increase of 23 more deaths in 2015 than in the previous year took the total to 49.

    Meanwhile, the number of people being injured on the county's roads has gone down, says the South Yorkshire safer Roads Partnership, external.

    Sheffield Council leader Julie Dore is claiming victory in getting HS2 to come into the city centre rather than just stopping at Meadowhall. 

    In a statement she says the Government has concluded that a city centre station location is the best option, because analysis shows it will create thousands more jobs than the Meadowhall option. 

    Yet, according to the National Audit Office, says the whole 56 billion pound High Speed Rail project is under financial strain and could be delayed by a year. Tom Ingall Makes sense of it all:
