  1. Watch: Police and Crime Panel discuss future of SY Chief Constablepublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    The South Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel, which scrutinises the work of Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Billings is meeting at lunchtime to discuss his proposal to call on David Crompton to resign as chief constable.

    The panel - which is mainly made up of local councillors - can give views on Dr Billings' proposal but it does not have the power of veto. 

    The panel and Dr Billings have received advice from the Chief Inspector of Constabulary, Sir Tom Winsor, about the plan. A leaked letter shows that Sir Tom believes that requiring Mr Crompton to resign is "conspicuously unfair, disproportionate and... unreasonable". 

    Dr Billings will make the final decision about whether Mr Crompton should resign or not and, under legislation, the Chief Constable must comply with it - but it's not expected that a decision will be announced today.

    The chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group has rejected suggestions made by the head of a police watchdog that the former head of South Yorkshire Police should be reinstated in his job. 

    David Crompton was dismissed following the inquest verdicts in April this year. 

    But the Chief Inspector of Constabulary Sir Tom Windsor has reportedly described the decision to remove him as "unfair and disproportionate".

  3. Former mayor of New York on Northern Powerhouse boardpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    We've been hearing this morning that the former Chancellor George Osborne is to chair a new think tank aimed at taking forward his "Northern Powerhouse" plan.

    The new body, an independent group of politicians, business and civic leaders, which does not yet have an office, will include the former mayor of New York, billionaire businessman Michael Bloomberg.

    He'll help to advise the powerful new elected "metro"  mayors being created in city regions including Sheffield, Liverpool and Manchester.

    Earlier, Mr Osborne said there was a "little bit of a wobble" about Number 10's commitment to the Northern Powerhouse in the first days of the new novernment, but suggested this had been overcome. 

  4. Did you see four-lorry crash on M18?published at 11:31 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    Police want to speak to anyone who witnessed a crash involving four lorries on the M18 on Monday. 

    Two of the lorry drivers suffered minor injuries in the incident whiuch happened at about 09:00 on the northbound carriageway between junctions 1 and 2. 

    It's thought a car may have come to a stop in the outside lane with its hazard lights on, just before the incident happened.

    Full back Darnell Fisher serves a one-match ban as Rotherham face fellow strugglers Blackburn tomorrow.

    Fisher was sent off in Rotherham's draw with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

    We've been talking this morning about the news that there are now fears missing Sheffield toddler Ben Needham may have been accidentally crushed by a digger.

    South Yorkshire Police, external say they will be travelling to Kos in the coming weeks to follow up new lines of inquiry as part of the investigation into the Ben's disappearance 25 years ago.

    Working with the Greek authorities, officers say they are now in a position to travel back to the island and commence "digs" at two sites close to where Ben was last seen on 24 July 1991.

    The route of a heroes' parade to celebrate the achievements of Yorkshire's Olympic and Paralympic athletes has been announced.

    The Rio Heroes homecoming event is to be held in Leeds from 17:45 BST on 28 September. Some roads will shut.

    Athletes taking part will tour the city centre on open-top buses.

    Paralympic wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft and Olympic triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee will be among the medallists taking part.

    Missing toddler Ben Needham may have been accidentally killed after being crushed by a digger, campaigners searching for him have confirmed.

    Ben, from Sheffield, was 21 months old when he disappeared on the Greek island of Kos on 24 July 1991.

    The official campaign group, headed by his mother Kerry, said police investigating his disappearance are set to excavate two sites there.

    Kerry has been told to "prepare for the worst" by detectives who suspect he may have died 25 years ago, the Daily Mirror has reported, external.

  12. Council rejects new HS2 route described as 'a dog's dinner knocked up on the back of a fag packet'published at 09:16 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    The new proposed HS2 route for South Yorkshire has had its second rejection in a fortnight. After Rotherham voted against the proposals last week - last night all 48 of Doncaster's councillors did the same.

    Under new plans, the railway line would move further east between Rotherham and Doncaster - cutting through the Dearne Valley.

    At the meeting Doncaster Councillor Nigel Ball described the route as "a dog's dinner... knocked up on the back of a fag packet."

    Many people affected by the proposed route attended the meeting last night. One resident told the BBC they were "over the moon" about the result of the vote and felt "happier and safer because....Doncaster council are 100% behind us".  

  13. Suspended South Yorkshire Chief Constable 'should have kept his job'published at 08:47 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    The Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police who was suspended in the wake of the Hillsborough inquests was "unfairly" dismissed, a police chief has said. 

    David Crompton lost his job after the inquests into the deaths of 96 football fans ruled that police conduct contributed to or caused the disaster. Concerns about public trust and confidence in the force led to his suspension on 27 April.

    Chief Inspector of Constabulary Sir Tom Winsor, who is required to give his views as part of dismissal proceedings, said criticisms of Mr Crompton were "conspicuously unfair" and he should be reinstated.

    Former Chancellor George Osborne is to chair a new think tank aimed at taking forward his "Northern Powerhouse" plan.

    As chancellor, Mr Osborne championed the idea of creating an economy in the north of England to rival those of London and the South East.

    But there have been concerns that the project may go off the rails under PM Theresa May, who sacked Mr Osborne.

    Mr Osborne said the PM had committed to the vision but told the Sun: "We can't just expect Whitehall to do it all." "It has to be a team effort," he told the newspaper.
