    1. An unexploded WW2 munition was found and shut a lot of the city centre down this morning
    2. Workers for Virgin Trains East Coast were striking over working conditions
    3. Online taxi firm Uber are unhappy with new rules being introduced in Sheffield
    4. An Inside Out programme about domestic workers airs tonight and features the heartbreaking story of a woman now living in Barnsley
    5. And the search for missing toddler Ben Needham continued in Kos today

  2. Virgin Trains East Coast strike 'solid' says RMTpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    A strike by workers on Virgin Trains East Coast has been well-supported, the RMT union has said.Link

    Virgin said it was running a full timetable, with some minor changes. Three services have had their route altered because of a shortage of crew, external.

  4. Multi-vehicle smash closes lanes on M1 southboundpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    There's queuing traffic all the way back to J35 after a multi-vehicle crash on the M1 southbound.

    There's two lanes blocked and very slow traffic at J32, M18, because of the accident.

    The knock-on effect has meant that it's slow going on the Sheffield Parkway out of the city, so if you're joining the rush hour traffic, you might be sat for a while.

    Plenty of fine dry, weather with good spells of prolonged sunshine this afternoon. Feeling pleasant in the sunshine with highs of about 15C (59F).

    It'll be another dry night to come with plenty of clear spells.

    We are at risk of some isolated mist and fog patches forming, particularly further east and it will feel chilly but not as cold as last night with lows of about 11C (52F).

  6. Former Sheffield United player Dean Windass in bankruptcy court hearingpublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Former Premier League footballer Dean Windass is involved in bankruptcy proceedings.

    Tax officials have said the ex-Hull City player owes them more than £150,000.

    A specialist judge has overseen a preliminary Bankruptcy Court hearing in London. Mr Windass did not attend court but was represented by a barrister.

    There's a lane blocked and very slow traffic on the M1 southbound at J32, M18, because of an accident.

    Congestion is back to J33, A630, Sheffield Parkway.

  8. Improvements made at Rotherham's Safeguarding Children Boardpublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    A new report has found progress has been made at Rotherham's Safeguarding Children Board, but that more needs to be done to protect youngsters in the borough.

    Serious weaknesses identified by Ofsted have been addressed, and the priorities for the current year are to extend its influence with key decision making bodies and the wider community.

    Rotherham Council says it has put more money into the service despite severe funding cuts to the local authority as a whole.  

  9. BBC Listening Project coming to Sheffield's Central Librarypublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    The Listening Project mobile recording booth is coming to Sheffield this month, recording conversations of ordinary people, to be broadcast by Radio 4 and saved by the British Library.

    The project began in 2012 and so far over 1000 conversations have been recorded and added to the British Library’s oral history collections.

  10. Visa changes needed to help migrant domestic workerspublished at 14:59 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Urgent changes are needed to the UK visa system to protect migrant workers from being used as domestic slaves, a campaign group has warned.

    The Home Office said it is committed to protecting victims of domestic slavery.

    Justice 4 Domestic Workers is calling for a better deal for foreign workers, who are employed mainly as nannies or maids in private homes.

    The group supports some of the 17,000 people who come to UK for domestic work each year, and there's a special programme about it on Inside Out tonight at 19:30 on BBC One.

  11. Uber unhappy with new Sheffield taxi rulespublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Online taxi firm Uber has objected to new rules designed to protect public safety, which will affect all of the city's 1200 private hire vehicles.

    Under the policy, firms will be forced to only send out taxis to customers where the vehicle and driver are licensed by Sheffield City Council.

    This will cut the large number of vehicles registered outside the city.

    All firms must also set up phone lines for customer complaints and emergencies.  

  12. UPDATE: Sheffield Road re-opens following WW2 bombpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Police say Matilda Street has been declared safe, after it was closed this morning following reports of an unexploded World War Two bomb.

    The area has now re-opened.

  13. Ian Hislop brings satirical newspaper to Sheffield stagepublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Ian Hislop is best known as the editor of Private Eye, as well as being a regular on Have I Got News for You. 

    He's now teamed up with cartoonist Nick Newman to bring us the story of "The Wipers Times", which is a satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme.

    It's now been adapted for the stage and is on at Sheffield's Lyceum Theatre next month.

  14. How would you draw dementia?published at 13:38 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Students at Sheffield College have been challenged with just that question.

    The winning painting is below and was created by Nadheer Jasim.

    It comes after they were challenged by University of Sheffield lecturer David Reid, who lectures in dementia.

    16-year-old Rebekah Cohen's celebrating after being shortlisted for the BBC Young Writers Award 2016. 

    The announcement was made by Alice Levine during her show on Radio 1.

    Rebekah, who's a pupil at Tapton School, will find out tomorrow if she's won.

    Police say bomb disposal experts are on their way to Matilda Street, following reports that an unexploded World War Two device has been found.

    Three other old bombs were discovered in the same road last Thursday.

  18. Female domestic workers abused by Yorkshire employerspublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Women have been beaten and abused by their employers while working as domestic workers, according to a special programme on BBC One tonight. 

    Cecelia is a domestic worker from the Philippines. She was raped and fell pregnant to her abuser whilst working in the Middle East.
