  2. Stroke care plans out to consultationpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Stroke causes image

    Plans to change the way people get care after having a stroke are now up for public comment.

    The idea for change is because standards of care can vary a lot, and health officials say they want to improve things by focusing certain types of care, external in particular places. The change would affect the first 72-hours of care, said to be the most important in terms of minimising the long-term effects of a stroke.

    After that period, patients would return to the local hospital for further treatment.

  4. Man critically ill from house fire, arson suspectedpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Two women and a man were pulled from a house fire in Wath-upon-Dearne today.

    The 66-year-old man is critically ill after the blaze on Moor Road.

    Two women were treated for the effects of smoke and have been discharged from hospital.

    A 35-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

    There's a police appeal for witnesses.

  6. Ched Evans rape trial update: woman 'had no idea' what was happeningpublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Cardiff Crown Court has begun hearing evidence in the rape trial of footballer Ched Evans.The Chesterfield striker denies raping a 19-year-old at a Premier Inn in north Wales in May 2011.

    Mr Evans was found guilty of rape at Caernarfon Crown Court in 2012, but his conviction was quashed in April.

    Today the court has heard that the woman had "no idea what on earth was happening".

    Jurors were told the woman was intoxicated and could not have consented to sex, as Mr Evans claims. The Prosecution told the jury the woman was "very drunk" and believes her drink may have been spiked, although not by Mr Evans.

    The hearing continues.

    Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal has demanded a vast improvement from his side in front of goal. 

    The Owls failed to convert several chances in Saturday's defeat to Brighton; a worrying trend for some fans over recent games. 

    Carvalhal says addressing this is his key priority during the international break.

  8. Farmhouse extension demolished in Ben Needham searchpublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Today has seen part of a farmhouse being flattened to allow police to search the soil beneath in their quest to find Ben Needham. 

    He disappeared 25 year ago on the island of Kos when he was a small boy.

    Police think Ben's body may be buried in the farmhouse area, after being told Ben had been accidentally killed by the driver of a digger.

  9. Behind the hoardings in Barnsley town centre - asbestos removalpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    As a major redevelopment programme goes on, people passing by hoardings in Barnsley town centre might wonder what's going on in the former shops there.

    On May Day Green, asbestos removal has been taking place and the council's shared this photo of what's been happening out of the public gaze.

    The town centre is seeing big changes, external; the May Day Green market building is now open for around three years while the main market hall is readied for top-to-bottom refurbishment.

    A new central library will be built and a public square created.

    The council is backing the scheme itself financially after prolonged efforts to gain City support didn't come off.

  10. Energy bills 'scandal', says Rotherham MPpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    The majority of people in Rotherham are being over-charged by the big-six energy companies, says Sarah Champion.

    The MP says it means may thousands of people paying well over £300 extra, external per year than if they were on lower tariffs, rather than the highest ones. 

    She say companies aren't doing as they should in terms of telling people about the tariffs that could save them money.

    The BBC has produced some pointers to help people save money on their energy bills.

  11. House fire rescues prompt appeal over 'suspicious' causepublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Three people had to be rescued from a house fire in Wath-upon-Dearne in the early hours of today.

    Now police are asking if any suspicious activity was seen on Moor Road.

    All three needed treatment in hospital for the effects of smoke.

    AS a group they do what it says on the can..Sheffield Robotics, external is a group of more than seventy academics and their research groups, working on... robotics,

    We've been along today to see them in light of a new TV series, Westworld, getting underway.

    It's set in a futuristic theme park staffed by artificially intelligent robots where guests can live out their wildest fantasies.  

    Like getting home and finding the takeaway hasn't messed up your order. 

    We can dream. 

    Radio Sheffield's Kat Cowan found this little fella a touch troubling.

  14. Ched Evans rape trial jury sworn inpublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Jurors have been sworn in for the retrial of footballer Ched Evans who is facing a charge of rape. 

    The 27-year-old Chesterfield and Wales striker stands accused of assaulting a woman at a hotel in north Wales in May 2011. 

    The former Manchester City and Sheffield United forward, who has made 13 appearances for Wales, denies the charge against him. 

    Ahead of the prosecution's opening, which is due to take place this afternoon at Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Nicola Davies told the jury they must not discuss the case with anyone outside their number.

    Charities and community groups in Sheffield are being urged to get involved in driving out hate crime, external.

    The idea is to establish projects that will fulfill five aims set by the government:

    • Preventing hate crime 
    • Responding to hate crime in communities 
    • Increasing the reporting of hate crime 
    • Improving support for the victims of hate crime 
    • Building understanding of hate crime    

     Applications close on 14 October and there is more information here, external.  

    In August the UN blamed issues around the EU Referendum for a rise in hate crime.

  16. New Master Cutler takes up office in Sheffieldpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

     Richard Edwards, the next Master Cutler, is formally taking up the role today.

    The process involves a ceremony in the Cutlers' Hall, followed by a service at Sheffield's Cathedral.

    The role of the Master Cutler is to champion industry and technology based in the city, not just cutlery and steel-making.

    The city has a long-held reputation for metallurgy and steel-making, with the Cutlers' Company, external founded in 1624.

    Students in Sheffield are being encouraged to consider a policing career, after figures showed very few graduates think of joining up.

    According to the charity, Police Now, external, only 5% of those leaving university give any thought to a policing career, thinking it's a limited option with an unsettling relocation in store.

    There's a graduate scheme aimed at getting them to think again and it's been visiting Sheffield with a roadshow:

    A rape investigation in Barnsley has led police to release images from CCTV of a man detectives want to trace.

    A member of the public told police that a 25 year old woman was attacked in the Sparrow Park area , externalon July 10th.

  20. Watch: Farmhouse extension now demolished on Kos in Ben Needham searchpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    A digger has demolished part of a farmhouse as police continue to look for Ben Needham.

    He disappeared on the island in 1991 as his family were renovating a property there.

    Police have been told that Ben was accidentally killed by a digger driver as he played nearby. This has prompted a new search of farmland which has been going on for more than a week:
