Student denies Buckingham Palace knife carrying incidentpublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

A Sheffield student has denied carrying a folded knife near Buckingham Palace.
Hang Zhang, 25, of Hawley Street, Sheffield, was found at the main gate of the palace in London on 12 August.
He pleaded not guilty to possessing an offensive weapon in a public place when he appeared at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court via video-link.

The Chinese national, who was sectioned under the Mental Health Act, opted for a trial at a magistrates' court and the date is yet to be fixed.
Mr Zhang, who is a student at Sheffield University, is due to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on 26 October.

Rotherham Council to buy Forge Island sitepublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

Rotherham Council has been given the go ahead to buy the former Tesco site at Forge Island.
The authority says several developers have already shown an interest in building on the land.
Demolition work is likely to begin on the site in December,

The land will play a key role in the redevelopment of Rotherham town centre.
It'll be used as a "vibrant leisure quarter" with some houses and flats also on the land.
Detailed proposals will be unveiled as part of the Rotherham town centre masterplan.

Yorkshire to host 2019 UCI Road World Championshipspublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

We've got it!
Yorkshire is to play host to another major cycling event.
The county will host the 2019 UCI Road World Championships.
The government will spend £24 million on the event, with £15 million of that used to create 27 cycle sport facilities across the UK.
An additional £3 million will be put in by National Lottery funding for UK Sport.

South Yorkshire Police get 61 "creepy clown" callspublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

South Yorkshire Police has been contacted by 61 members of the public relating to the nationwide concerns over "creepy clowns".
The breakdown of reports across the area was:
- Sheffield - 21
- Rotherham - 18
- Doncaster - 11
- Barnsley - 10
The clowns are accused of knocking on doors and windows and frightening children and adults.
Two reports involved knives and officers say they will not tolerate any criminal behaviour.

E-fit released of suspected car key thief in Rotherhampublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

Police in Rotherham are looking for a man accused of stealing car keys from a woman in Rotherham.
The man's said to have approached a woman parked in her car in The Maltings area of Moorgate, told her to get out of the car and then took her car keys.
He's then believed to have run off towards Canklow Woods.

The woman's green Skoda Octavia was not taken in the theft on the 20th September.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact them on 101.
Man admits attacking Sheffield police officer with an axepublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

A man's admitted attacking a female police officer with an axe in Sheffield last April..
But he denies trying to murder PC Lisa Bates.
Her skull was fractured and a finger on her right hand was virtually severed in the attack by 35 year old Nathan Sumner outside his flat in the Gleadless district of Sheffield.
Hillsborough families react to IPCC decisionpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

The families of some of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster have given their reaction to the news the police watchdog will not investigate their complaint against former South Yorkshire Police chief David Crompton.
Solicitors acting on behalf of 20 of the families Broudie Jackson Canter have condemned the decision of the IPCC.

IPCC will not investigate David Crompton Hillsborough complaintpublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

Police watchdog, the IPCC, will not investigate a complaint made by Hillsborough families about alleged instructions given by suspended South Yorkshire Police chief David Crompton to his legal team at the inquests into the disaster.

The complaint specifically alleged that Mr Crompton instructed barristers representing the force at the inquests to “pour blame” on the Liverpool fans.
Deputy chair Rachel Cerfontyne said that, while questions were asked on behalf of SYP about fan behaviour, there is "insufficient evidence to suggest these questions were part of a deliberate and concerted attempt by SYP to blame Liverpool fans for the disaster."
The IPCC report, external concluded an investigation would be “significantly hampered”, as it would be unable to review any communications between Mr Crompton and his legal team due to Legal Professional Privilege (LPP).

Officers searching the second site on Kos for the missing Sheffield toddler have been making good progress today.
They've moved more than 800 tonnes of soil overall.

I've been chatting to explorer Jason Lewis.
He spent thirteen years travelling the world for the first human-powered circumnavigation around the planet.
But he got into a bit of hot water crossing between Egypt and Sudan when he was mistaken for a spy!
Jason will be giving a talk called The Expedition, external tomorrow night at the Pennine Theatre at Sheffield Hallam University.
It's taking place as part of the Off the Shelf festival.

There's been a large rise in the number of people being hospitalised due to allergies.
Five years ago Sheffield Children's Hospital saw 20 cases a year, now they see more than a hundred.
