    Jenny Coleman
    Reporter, BBC Local Live

The complaint specifically alleged that Mr Crompton instructed barristers representing the force at the inquests to “pour blame” on the Liverpool fans.

Deputy chair Rachel Cerfontyne said that, while questions were asked on behalf of SYP about fan behaviour, there is "insufficient evidence to suggest these questions were part of a deliberate and concerted attempt by SYP to blame Liverpool fans for the disaster."

The IPCC report, external concluded an investigation would be “significantly hampered”, as it would be unable to review any communications between Mr Crompton and his legal team due to Legal Professional Privilege (LPP).

    Quote Message

To investigate David Crompton without access to the instructions he gave to his legal team, when he is no longer operational and when the available evidence does not appear to support the bringing of criminal or disciplinary proceedings would, in my opinion be disproportionate."

    Rachel Cerfontyne, Deputy Chair, IPCC
