    People opposed to the closure of a home for people with dementia in Sheffield are to present a 10,000-signature petition to the city council.

    Many of those with relatives at Hurlfield View are attending a Sheffield Council meeting to discuss the issue.  

    Campaigner Sue Hardy has spoken on the steps of Sheffield Town Hall saying the city's system for caring for those with the illness is "broken":

    Police have released CCTV images after a 17-year-old boy was hurt during an attack with a pole in Sheffield.

    He was attacked after refusing to hand over his mobile to two other boys in Charnock Park last July.

    Now detectives have released images of a man they want to speak to in connection with their investigation:

    The man has been described as about 5ft 9ins tall, of an average build and with short brown hair.  

    Anyone with any information is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101.

    There's a new campaign to make Bradford the most gay-friendly city in the UK.

    More than 100 film, debate and sporting events have been organised in the city to coincide with LGBT history month. 

    The events are set to mark social and political contributions made by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

    Wentworth Castle Gardens are to close in the spring due to a lack of funding to keep them going.

    The attraction gets thousands of visitors a year.  

    In a statement, the Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust said every effort would be made to ensure pre-booked weddings and events could still go ahead.

    The Northern College of Adult Residential Education will not be affected by the decision to close the 18th century gardens, the statement adds.

  8. Trial to take the strain out of buying train ticketspublished at 13:49 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2017

    A new trial to overhaul rail fares on some routes through West Yorkshire will begin in May.

    It's after train companies such as Virgin East Coast and Cross Country admitted that buying the right ticket could be "baffling". 

    The system will make sure that passengers pay the cheapest possible fares and can avoid the need to split their tickets on longer journeys.

    A school in Sheffield is hoping to swap its way into the record books.

    Deer Park Primary School in Wingerworth is attempting to break the world record for: "the number of books exchanged in a single venue over an eight-hour period".

    The 344 pupils are asking people to come along between 09:00 and 17:00 to help their record breaking attempt.

    Well, maybe it's on the way because in a part of West Yorkshire today bus passengers in Keighley, Bingley, and Bradford can take part in a trial of touchless ticketing.

    Instead of a card though, and this is where Yorkshire improves on London, you can use an app on your phone.

    Everyone who takes part in the trial will get half-price travel on the Shuttle 662 route which runs between Keighley and Bradford.

    Detectives investigating a suspected serious sexual assault in Sheffield are focusing on a two minute gap.

    They say the 21-year-old female victim went in to Weston Park at 22:48 on 23 January but woke up two minutes later on the ground.

    Police have interviewed witnesses, gathered forensic evidence and examined CCTV footage since the suspected attack.

    Officers have also thanked the public for their help and say the investigation is being treated as a priority.

    Plans to spend millions of pounds on improving Harrogate's Station Parade area are being discussed today.

    The borough council is looking at how the money from the government's Local Growth Deal would be best spent - and says revamping the station area is a priority. 

    The cash is a share of more than £23m awarded to York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership.

  14. Ken Morrison dies aged 85: Supermarket pays tribute to 'inspirational retailer'published at 12:39 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2017

    Ken Morrison, the man who built the Bradford-based Morrisons supermarket into the fourth-largest in the UK, has died at the age of 85.

    His family said he died after a short illness.

    He retired from the supermarket in 2008 after being in charge of the company for more than 50 years, turning the chain into a national name from its beginnings as a family business.

    He was the longest-serving chairman of a FTSE 100 company in the UK, and Morrisons awarded him the honorary post of Life President after he left the firm.

    More than 10,000 people have signed a petition criticising the ending of overnight care on Bassetlaw Hospital's children's ward.

    The change means young people will have to go to Doncaster for treatment instead.

    Bassetlaw MP John Mann is concerned it could be first step towards closing down the town's hospital.

    Two public meetings are planned in Retford and Worksop on Saturday.

    The bill for your water and sewerage treatment is going to rise from 1 April, by 2.06% Yorkshire Water has announced.

    Yorkshire Water claim that we have the lowest bills in England and Wales, your annual bill will be an average of £373.

    From today advertising boards are banned from pavements in York city centre in a year long trial.

    Officials think the A-Boards have an "unacceptable impact" on wheelchair users and blind or partially-sighted people. 

    Only businesses on Micklegate will be able to use them and even they'll have to apply for permission.
