An amber weather warning covering Yorkshire has ended now, but the Met Office still has a yellow warning in place until 06:00 GMT on Friday.
Looking a bit further ahead, temperatures are expected to pick up into the weekend, with the icy weather confined to the far north of Scotland by Saturday.
A number of flights landing at Leeds Bradford Airport this evening have been diverted due to snow and ice.
Flights landing from Amsterdam, Faro and Alicante have all landed at alternative airports.
Other flights are subject to delays.

There's been a major power cut in Hebden Bridge this afternoon, with more than 1,300 homes affected.
Northern Powergrid had earlier estimated that lines would be restored by 16:00 GMT, although dozens of properties were still without power, according to its website.

Although an early school closure is likely to be music to students' ears, one headteacher said it was one of the "biggest decisions to make".
Tim Milburn, in charge at Rossett School in Harrogate, decided to send pupils home at 13:15 GMT because of the weather conditions.
He said the decision was "first and foremost about the safety of the whole school community".
"Particularly our young people and ensuring they can travel safely home but equally, our staff as well.
"Many of our staff don't live locally. Some of them live 45 minutes to an hour away so we've got to make sure they can also get home safely."
Mr Milburn said while the adults made the decision, the experience was very different for pupils.
"This is a really exciting day for many of our students... hopefully they've got home this afternoon and the snowball fights and sledging has begun"
Thanks to BBC Weather Watcher Rosie for sending us this pictures of a snowy scene in Huddersfield:
The Amber weather warning for snow and ice remains in place across Yorkshire until 18:00 so there's a chance the snow will continue to build for a while.
This picture, also by BBC Weather Watcher Rosie, captures another snowy scene in Huddersfield earlier today:
It's been a similar picture elsewhere across West Yorkshire as BBC Weather Watcher Bobtown Chris captures with this pretty view of Scapegoat Hill in Kirklees:
Thanks to BBC Weather Watcher Sue for these pictures showing how the snow's been falling in Ryhill, Wakefield.
Looks like there's been plenty of it so far - will there be more to come?
People have been pictured leaving their cars around parts of Sheffield and continuing their journeys on foot as snow causes the roads to become gridlocked.
Some of the roads experiencing long queues of traffic include the entrance to Shire Brook Valley, Coisley Hill and towards Normanton Hill in the Normanton Springs area.

Well, what a difference a couple of hours make...
The snow is coming down pretty steadily here at Shelf.
It’s a village on the outskirts of Bradford and much higher up than the city centre.
Currently, there’s a white quilt covering the fields.
And I’m aware of at least one primary school in nearby Oxenhope which is about to close.
The roads are still passable, but drivers have slowed right down and put their lights on to pierce the gloom.
If you can, stay at home…it’ll certainly be a lot warmer!

I'm with Anthony Cook, supervisor for Barnsley Council, one of 12 gritter operators out and about in the Penistone area today.
Behind us is 12 tonnes of grit and salt which is being used to treat the main roads and some side streets.
About 3ins of snow has fallen over the last few hours, and we're expecting it to turn to sleet and rain soon.
Up on the Woodhead Pass, the A628, the snow was pretty much falling sideways - but the road was still open.
On our travels, we've seen lots of children out on their sledges and lots of people having snow days because of the Amber weather warning which is in place until 18:00 tonight.
People are still going about their daily business, walking to work or the shops - out on foot with their backpacks and their hats on as it is absolutely freezing here.
By the way, if you've ever wondered how gritter and snow plough drivers get to work, I asked Anthony, who told me, simply: "By hook or by crook, we'll have to get there."
National Highways has warned drivers in areas of Yorkshire affected by the snow to take extra care.
With an Amber weather warning for snow and ice in place until 18:00 on Thursday, it has warned that Pennine routes could be particularly affected - especially on the highest parts, such as on the M62.
National Highways, in conjunction with the Met Office, says it is "strongly advising" that travel in these areas is likely to be "extended or even disrupted".
"Road users should heed messages on the overhead signs and listen for radio updates. Road users are advised to take extra care if travelling in the affected regions," it adds.
All the latest travel updates can be found on the National Highways website, external.
Thanks to BBC Weather Watcher Beth for sending us this picture from Linthwaite in Kirklees.
These ducks seem singularly unbothered by the snow which is currently falling across West Yorkshire:

Rain has given way to snow in Ripon, including here in the grounds of the North Yorkshire cathedral, making for slippy routes underfoot.
As it’s got heavier, the usual Thursday market is much smaller than usual with many stallholders understandably packing up early.
While the snow is only just beginning to settle, it’s continuous and not showing any signs of slowing anytime soon.
Snow's been falling in West, South and North Yorkshire, with an Amber weather warning due to stay in place until 20:00 today
So, how much more can we expect and when might it eventually stop?
BBC weather presenter Katerina Christodoulou has the answers:
Bus passengers in South Yorkshire face disruption as the snow continues to fall.
First Bus says due to the weather and road conditions, normal services aren't running.
The operator says routes are constantly being assessed and updated.
The snow's not just falling in South and West Yorkshire, but North Yorkshire, too.
Thanks to Suzanne Excell who's sent us these pictures from her garden in Hawes showing Stags Fell under a covering of the white stuff:
Due to abandoned cars blocking the tramway in a part of Sheffield because of the snow, there has been disruption to services, operator Stagecoach says.
The purple route, which runs from Herdings Park through to Gleadless, Sheffield railway station and on to the city centre, is currently suspended, Stagecoach says.
The blue route was also suspended earlier but is running again - although with some disruption.
The operator says cars struggling in snow are slowing services and might result in further disruption
It adds: "Where you can, please allow extra time for your journeys."
The snow has been coming down thick and fast in Ripponden, Calderdale:

The snow is coming down in Sheffield city centre.
Earlier, I saw people gingerly making their way down to the railway station.
The Amber weather warning is in place until later today and although the trains are still running, we’re hearing there could be some travel disruption as the day goes on.
As I left the station and walked back over to Parkhill, I got that lovely view of the city.
There’s a slight coating on the ground and the snow is picturesque.
However, it feels like this is an emerging picture in Sheffield.
