  2. Lichfield MP tables Commons amendment to 'scrap' HS2 routepublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March 2016

    The Conservative MP for Lichfield has tabled an amendment in the House of Commons, external which he says could lead to the £50bn high-speed rail line HS2 being scrapped.

    Michael Fabricant is not happy that the route from Birmingham to London goes through countryside in his constituency. 

    He says he is not against HS2 as a whole but says the route should be changed, and is asking MPs to vote against the government as they did on Sunday Trading earlier this week. 

    A DfT spokesperson said: "The strategic case for HS2 is crystal clear. It will have a transformational effect on the country, supporting growth by improving connectivity, freeing up space on our crowded rail network, promoting regeneration, boosting skills and generating thousands of jobs."

    The Stoke City winger, Peter Odemwingie, has joined Bristol City on loan, external for the rest of the season, the club has said today.

    The Potters say the 34-year-old has struggled for game time, making just eight appearances so far this season.

    About £400,000 of watches were stolen, external during yesterday's early morning raid on a jewellers in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. 

    Staffordshire Police say they're continuing to trawl through CCTV after a group of masked men smashed their way through the front of intu Potteries and then broke into Beaverbrooks. 

    Officers say it was a pre-planned crime and the men were very methodical, targeting only high value watches, not jewellery, and were in and out within minutes. 

    Some of them also started a fire at the centre's main entrance.

    The government says it is looking at whether charges on the M6 Toll could be lifted when there are problems on surrounding motorways.

    The suggestion comes from the Conservative MP for Solihull, Julian Knight, who told the Commons there was a "day of chaos" on the roads last month.   

    Thousands of drivers were stuck in queues following overrunning engineering work on the M6. Highways England says it is still investigating whether opening the toll road would have eased the problem.

    Police and council leaders in south Cheshire insist they're addressing problems between community groups in Crewe.

    It's after a number of disturbances in the town last month, including Cheshire Police being called to a fight at Sir William Stanier Community School, external.

    At the time, Cheshire East Council described the events in Crewe, external as "very challenging". Authorities have since met over the issues and say tackling any tensions is a "top priority".

    A special birthday celebration is being held in Keele this weekend for one of north Staffordshire's best known residents, Neil "Nello" Baldwin, who turns 70 next week.

    The former Stoke City kit man and mascot was the subject of the BBC film Marvellous, which won two Baftas last year. 

    In 2013 he was awarded an honorary degree by Keele University and last year was given the freedom of Stoke-on-Trent.

    To mark his birthday, guests including actors, former football stars and friends will gather together to celebrate.

    For every five child sexual exploitation (CSE) complaints in Staffordshire, one person has been charged, the BBC has discovered.

    Staffordshire Police charged 173 people for 1055 offences, a Freedom of Information request revealed.  

    The force started recording CSE in April 2014. Their total number of prosecutions between 2012 and 2015 was 269.
