    Armed police have been called out in Stoke-on-Trent after reports a woman's car was shot at , externalin Hanley.

    Staffordshire Police say it happened last night on Leek Road  - the woman said a van pulled alongside her car, she heard a loud bang and her passenger window shattered. 

    Officers say she thought it was a gun shot and pulled over while the van drove off - her female passenger was hurt by the shattered glass but didn't need hospital treatment. 

    The force says armed police shut several roads and searched the area but no weapon was seen or projectile found.

    A mother accused of murdering her 21-month-old daughter lived in a garage while pregnant, a midwife told a court.

    Kathryn Smith, who's 23, had a history of self-harm, substance abuse and mental health issues and her pregnancy was not planned, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

    Ayeeshia Jane Smith died at her home in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, when her heart was torn by a forceful stamp, a jury was told.

    Ms Smith and her partner, Matthew Rigby, 22, both from Nottingham, deny murder. They have also pleaded not guilty to allowing or causing a child's death and child cruelty.

    The trial continues.
