    Several Staffordshire and Cheshire firms are among nearly 200 companies named and shamed on the government's latest list of companies who have not been paying workers the National Minimum Wage(NMW), external

    The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy list includes: 

    - Voyage 1 Ltd, Lichfield, Staffordshire, owed £5,337.73 to 3 workers 

    - Catering Academy Ltd, Tamworth, Staffordshire, owed £4,220.48 to 1 worker 

    - Silverdale Care Homes Ltd, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, owed £2,590.99 to 1 worker

    - Mr Thomas Till and Mrs Pauline Till, trading as Misters of Stafford, owed £1,254.76 to 1 worker

    The first black footballer to play for Liverpool and a former Stoke City player has turned down an MBE nomination, saying it would be "a betrayal" to Africans who suffered at the hands of the British Empire.

    Howard Gayle, 58, was born in Toxteth and made his Reds debut in 1977. He later played in 1987 for the Potters.

    He said he had to decline the nomination, for his Show Racism the Red Card campaign work, as his ancestors would be "turning in their graves".

    The Cabinet Office said it did not comment on individual cases.

    The Rio Olympics are proving to be a great place to be if you're a Staffordshire athlete. 

    Joe Clarke from Stone won gold in the kayak slalom event last night at his first Olympic Games.

    It follows Uttoxeter's Adam Peaty's success in the pool on Monday, when he won gold for the 100 metre breaststroke.

    Winger Jerome Thomas says the Port Vale squad have been forced by their manager to rewatch the first half of their EFL Cup loss at Carlisle United. 

    The Vale, who are in League One, lost 2-1 to the League Two side in the first round of the competition.

    The Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has admitted he wants to sign the "outstanding" Saido Berahino from West Brom.

    He's been speaking at his press conference ahead of the Potters first game of the new Premier League season when they're away at Middlesbrough.

    He said: "We have an interest in him because he is an outstanding, young talent. 

    "We felt that there was the possibility that he could be leaving the club and we have made bids. 

    "It needs a lot of parties to come together and agree all aspects of the deal before that happens. We aren't in that position at the moment, but we will remain patient."

    A scooter ride who crashed into a tree in Cannock has died, external, police have confirmed today. 

    Staffordshire Police say Daniel Harper, 19, from the Bilston area, hit the tree on the Mill Green Nature Reserve area, Lichfield Road, on Sunday.

    He was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham but died there. 

    His family have appealed for information following his death, saying Daniel "will be missed by all that knew him, he will be in our hearts forever".

    Four plumbers from a firm in Birmingham, who have been jailed for over-charging elderly and vulnerable people in Staffordshire, have been called "scandalous".

    Staffordshire County Council say Plumb-Tech charged one couple, external around £900 for changing a tap - almost nine times the going rate.

    The authority says it's found 14 elderly victims who were affected between March 2014 and January 2016. 

    Sandra Stirzaker (featured in video) says she got them in to fix a leaky tap and was quoted £1,300 for the work.

    The four plumbers pleaded guilty between them to 14 charges of fraud by false representation at Stafford Crown Court and were jailed for sentences of between nine and 32 months.

    A Staffordshire woman says she's delighted people have supported her appeal to raise enough money to buy a wheelchair for her paralysed dog Millie.

    It happened at around 06:30 today in the Sainsbury's car park and the victim's been taken to hospital. 

    Staffordshire Police say the quartet were arrested on suspicion of serious assault.

    The Mayor of Stone says they are already working on giving Olympic champion Joe Clarke a special welcome back when he returns to his hometown after winning gold.

    Nine men have been charged with drugs offences, external, following raids in Crewe and Newcastle-under-Lyme

    Cheshire Police say they were all arrested yesterday as part of an operation targeting organised crime. 

    They're all due to appear before magistrates in Crewe, charged with conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. 

  16. Football attack trial: Witness saw fan unconscious and bleedingpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 11 August 2016

    A court's heard from football fans in the trial of five teenagers accused of an "unprovoked" attack on a Watford fan following a Wolves match in March last year. 

    Today the trial heard that as Nic Cruwys walked back to the train station in Wolverhampton after the match on 7 March 2015, it is said that he was attacked by a group of youths.

    One witness described seeing Mr Cruwys come under attack along with another man and then, later, seeing Mr Cruwys lying unconscious on the ground with blood coming from his nose. 

    Four 19-year-olds, including one from Staffordshire, and a 15-year-old deny grievous bodily harm with intent. The trial continues.
