  4. 'Terror' arrests in Staffordshire as bomb disposal team called to Birminghampublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 26 August 2016

    Two men, aged 32 and 37, have been arrested in the Stoke area of Staffordshire on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, West Midlands Police says, external

    A further two, aged 18 and 24, were arrested from their home addresses in Birmingham and another, aged 28, arrested at a further location in the city. 

    As a result of one of the arrests, police say, an Army bomb disposal team has been called in as a precautionary measure to the Lee Bank area of Birmingham.    

    Searches at a number of properties in Birmingham and Stoke are continuing.

    A man has been arrested in connection with thefts from churches across the Staffordshire Moorlands.

    Leek Police say the man was detained following a report of someone acting suspiciously at a village church. 

    The force says, over the last few months, there has been a spate of money being taken from churches as well as from charity collection boxes in Leek.

    The signings keep on coming at Vale Park - today the League One side's confirmed the transfer in of Martin Paterson.

    The 29-year-old's been to the area before as he's a former Stoke City player as well as turning out for Burnley, Blackpool and Northern Ireland. 

    He was also at Huddersfield and Scunthorpe, as well as having loans at Grimsby, Fleetwood and Bristol City - before becoming today Bruno Ribeiro's 16th signing of the summer at Vale Park.

    This bank holiday Monday, the town of Stone will host a homecoming for its very own Olympic hero, gold medal winning kayaker Joe Clarke.

    The event's taking place at Westbridge Park and will include a parade and church bells being rung in his honour.

    And if you can't make it in person - BBC Radio Stoke will be compering events and broadcasting live through the afternoon from 14:00.

    Villagers in Weston near Stafford are claiming victory in their battle to stop dog fouling in the area.

    Working with the borough council, they launched a campaign last year which involved putting up signs, handing out flyers and bags - and even buying night vision goggles to spot late night offenders.

    They say during a latest count in Weston there were no incidents of dog fouling spotted.

    A former NHS Trust chairman says he doesn't think children's services at Stafford's County Hospital will reopen again.

    The service was suspended yesterday because staff didn't have enough experience of resuscitating patients, according to managers.

    The medical director of the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said yesterday he didn't know when it would be safe for children to be treated back at the site. 

    Roy Lilley was chairman of Homewood NHS Trust and is now a health policy expert - he told BBC Radio Stoke he doesn't think the closure is just a temporary measure: "I can't see a way back from this. I think what will happen is they will reconfigure the local services."

    A Staffordshire Moorlands-based charity says it has rescued a dog that was found abandoned, thin and with a tumour so big, it was dragging on the floor.

    Chelsea the black labrador was handed into Moorlands Dog Rescue, external and is currently being cared for at Willow vets in Endon.

    Rachel Trafford from the service says Chelsea has daily physio, twice weekly hydrotherapy and round-the-clock care - but she is still in a critical condition.

    The rescue team say the dog's owners have never been traced.

    Four people avoided serious injury in a crash on the M6 near Stoke-on-Trent which saw one car overturn and the other mount a roadside barrier. , external

    West Midlands Ambulance Service says they had a "lucky escape" after the collision this morning between junctions 14 and 15.

    Medics say two of the people involved suffered no injuries, one was treated for minor injuries and the fourth, a woman, needed hospital treatment for a neck injury.
