    Amelia is the most popular girls name in the West Midlands while Muhammad is the most popular for boys, according to the Office for National Statistics. 

    Only London had Muhammad as the most popular choice in 2014 but the new figures show the West Midlands has joined the capital in 2015 for having the most babies with that name. Oliver was most popular overall across England and Wales.

    There were 649 Muhammads born in the West Midlands in 2015 compared with 622 Olivers. An alternative spelling - Mohammed - is also in the top 10.

    For girls regionally, the top choice, Amelia, was the same as the overall favourite in England and Wales.

    The data also shows the West Midlands to have a higher proportion of girls named Jessica than anywhere else. It ranks third for popularity in the region.

    Stoke-on-Trent North Labour MP Ruth Smeeth has called on her party's leader Jeremy Corbyn to publicly name and shame people carrying out online abuse "in his name". 

    Counter-terrorism police are providing special protection to Smeeth after she received anti-semitic abuse on social media.

    She told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme this was "one of the worst" pieces of abuse she'd had and was "done in the name of the name of the leader of the Labour Party which makes it even worse". 

    Ms Smeeth added that she wanted her "party's leader, the leader of Her Majesty's Official Opposition, to make it clear what can be done". 

    In a statement, a spokesperson for Jeremy Corbyn said "no abuse is carried out in Jeremy's name" and goes on to say all evidence of abuse should be reported to the party and police.

  10. Man jailed for life for Stoke-on-Trent killingpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

    A man's been jailed for life for killing a woman in Stoke-on-Trent.

    Barry Knapper, 31, from Cliveden Road was told he'd serve a minimum of four years and 172 days at Stafford Crown Court.

    Staffordshire Police say he will be detained in a psychiatric hospital, external due to his paranoid schizophrenia until he's deemed fit to serve the rest of his sentence in prison.

    Knapper pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility at an earlier hearing. 

    Police say he stabbed his partner, Lisa Reynolds, 30, also of Cliveden Road, on 21 February. 

    The judge at Stafford Crown Court described the attack as horrific and chilling and Lisa's family, in a statement, say her death has "devastated" their lives.

    An elderly man's been airlifted to hospital after collapsing after a car crash, external near Lichfield. 

    West Midlands Ambulance Service say his vehicle collided with another car on the Birmingham Road in Shenstone yesterday afternoon.

    They say both cars had suffered "substantial damage" but all three people inside the two vehicles managed to get out themselves. 

    However they say the 74-year-old man collapsed and was airlifted to hospital for more assessment and treatment.

    The trust says Paula Clark, who's currently chief executive of the The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, will take the same position at UHNM from the start of October. 

    She succeeds Mark Hackett who left the role earlier this year, saying the position was rewarding but intense.

  14. Crash victim calls for Alton Towers Smiler rollercoaster to be closed downpublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

    A woman who was hurt in a crash last year on the Smiler ride at Alton Towers says the rollercoaster should be closed down after its latest incident. 

    About 30 people were stuck on the ride for a short time when it was stopped at midday yesterday, for just over four hours.

    A spokeswoman said a piece of rubber "came away from one of the carriages" but "at no time were any guests at risk".

    Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd admitted breaching the Health and Safety Act after an investigation found the crash in June 2015 was caused by human error.  

    Chanda Chauhan, from Wednesbury, one of five people seriously injured in June 2015's Smiler crash called for it to be "closed completely".

    Thousands of people are expected to visit the Nantwich Food Festival which starts today.
