    Work's due to start to repair floors at a Stafford primary school which has been shut since last year, after high levels of formaldehyde were discovered. 

    About 20 pupils fell ill at Flash Ley Community Primary School and Nursery in October 2015 amid reports of a mystery smell.

    Staffordshire County Council say air testing at the site has revealed some areas are below levels set by the World Health Organisation so workers will start filling in flooring ducts from Monday. 

    The authority says once air quality in the rest of the school meets health standards, remaining work will be carried out so pupils can return. 

    Children have been taught in the meantime at nearby schools.

    An academic at Staffordshire University has been awarded a European prize for her work investigating Nazi-German terror in camps, external and at massacre sites across the continent. 

    Dr Caroline Sturdy Colls, Associate Professor of Forensic Archaeology and Genocide Investigation, has examined extermination and labour camps in Poland, Serbia and Germany.

    She has been awarded the European Archaeological Heritage Prize 2016 at a ceremony in Lithuania at which she was praised for her "crucial insights" into "some of the darkest moments of our history". 

    In reply, Dr Sturdy Colls said during her work she had met many survivors and descendants of the Holocaust and "it is for them that I do this work".

  7. Second murder arrest over man found in Crewepublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    A second man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, external after a man found in Crewe with serious injuries in an alleyway died. 

    Cheshire Police say they were called to reports the victim had been discovered unconscious off Edleston Road - the 51-year-old died in hospital a short time later.

    The force arrested a 20-year-old man this morning on suspicion of murder. 

    They now say they've also arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of murder and a 46-year-old woman on suspicion of assisting an offender. 

  8. Alton Towers Smiler rollercoaster: Passengers stuck 'for 30 minutes'published at 15:47 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    More than 30 passengers were stuck on the Smiler rollercoaster at Alton Towers for at least half an hour today, witnesses reported. 

    A spokeswoman for the resort said there had been a "temporary stoppage" but none of the 32 people suffered any injuries.

    Liam Dennett, 33, from Cheltenham was in the queue for the ride at the time and says he would not go on the ride after seeing what happened. 

    "My son still wants to go on it, but I wouldn't go on it personally now," he told the Press Association. 

    An Alton Towers spokeswoman says the ride is staying shut while their technical team investigates.

    Crewe Alexandra's striker Daniel Udoh says the EFL Trophy will help him become a better player.

    Udoh, who came to the club from non-league football, scored his first goal for the club in midweek but is yet to feature in the league this season.

    Hundreds of people have turned out for a hustings by the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in Stoke-on-Trent this afternoon. 

    They gathered outside the Intu Potteries shopping centre in Hanley.

    Mr Corbyn is in the city as part of his campaign to retain the leadership of the party.

    His rival Owen Smith spoke to supporters at Middleport Pottery over the weekend. 

    The result of the two-way contest is due to be announced at a special Labour conference on 24 September.

    More firefighters are to be recruited in Cheshire, external in the first drive of its kind in the area in six years.

    Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service hasn't revealed how many vacancies it's hoping to fill, but said it would focus on attracting more applicants "from black and minority ethnic communities".

  15. Alton Towers ride stopped after 'claims debris fell from carriage'published at 13:33 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    In a statement, a spokesperson for Alton Towers said the ride was stopped to "investigate claims a piece of debris that had fallen from a carriage".

    The theme park said the safety of visitors was its "priority" and the ride would remain closed "whilst the resort’s technical team investigate the matter". 

  16. Alton Towers visitors left stuck on Smiler ridepublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    Several people were left stuck on a ride at Alton Towers this morning, just over a year after a crash that left five people seriously injured.

    The Smiler ride was evacuated at about midday, and a spokesperson said there were no injuries from the "temporary stoppage".

    The ride reopened in March, nine months after the crash that led to two women needing leg amputations.

    Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd, which owns the theme park, admitted a breach of health and safety rules over last year's incident.
