  1. Drayton Manor staff 'shaken' by schoolgirl Evha Jannath's deathpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 11 May 2017

    In a post on its Facebook page, bosses at Drayton Manor Theme Park said the "tragedy" of Evha's death had "shaken the whole Drayton Manor family from the board, through to staff and visitors".

    The 11-year-old fell into the water while on the Splash Canyon rapids attraction.

    The theme park said staff's thoughts "continue to be with the family and all those who have been affected by Tuesday’s incident".

    Drayton Manor theme park says it will stay closed on Friday "to allow the Health and Safety Executive to complete their work" following the death of 11-year-old Leicester schoolgirl Evha Jannath who fell into water there on Tuesday.

    The attraction said its "thoughts continue to be with the family and all those who have been affected by Tuesday’s incident".

    Investigations are continuing into the death of a woman struck and killed by debris during high winds, an inquest has heard.

    Tahnie Martin, who was 29, died from serious head injuries after she was hit by a piece of timber in Wolverhampton city centre during Storm Doris in February.

    A pre-inquest review on Thursday heard the City of Wolverhampton Council is continuing investigations, which are expected to be completed ahead of another hearing on 25 July. A five-day inquest has been fixed for the week of 2 October.

    Miss Martin, from Stafford, who worked at the University of Wolverhampton, was struck by part of a 2m-long piece of timber which was part of a wooden water tank cover as she walked near a Starbucks cafe in Dudley Street.

  8. Tour Series cycle race in Hanley centre from 20:00published at 14:04 British Summer Time 11 May 2017

    Some of the world's top cyclists will be racing around the city centre streets tonight as it is the second stage of the Tour Series cycling championship.

    The race proper begins outside the Intu Potteries Centre, on Town Road, they'll come racing round Parliament Row past McDonalds and down past Wilkos and BBC Radio Stoke HQ before speeding down Cheapside past The Regent Theatre, across Picadilly, past The Sugar Mill and back up Trinity Street, before going up Stafford Street and round the back of the Potteries Shopping Centre.

    A large grass blaze in part of Stoke-on-Trent yesterday is believed to have been started deliberately, says Staffordshire Fire Service. 

    More than 15 firefighters from Longton, Cheadle and Leek were called to Park Hall Country Park at about 16:30 yesterday. 

    The fire covered 800 square metres of land, and took firefighters almost five hours to deal with.

  10. Bid to buy Port Vale: 'We sit here and wait for Norman'published at 12:48 British Summer Time 11 May 2017

    The woman behind a bid to buy Port Vale, Carol Shanahan, has told BBC Radio Stoke she hasn't given up hope of taking over the football club. 

    Shanahan, who's the managing director of an IT company based in Burslem, has had her bid of £1.25m rejected by owner Norman Smurthwaite. 

    She told Sport at Six last night that she's still interested in buying the relegated club.

  12. Why are there barriers throughout the streets of Hanley?published at 12:00 British Summer Time 11 May 2017

    If you've been into Hanley today you're probably wondering why the streets are filled with metal barriers?

    Well, a big cycling race is taking part through the town tonight - the Tour Series, external, a big loop will start from the shopping centre, going through the town passing Cheapside, the Town Hall and The Hive.

    Council workers are busy putting up barriers between the pavement and road as pro cyclists go round the route for 60 minutes.

    The tour in Stoke tonight is the second in the series, external before it moves on to Northwich, Wembley Park, Croydon, Bath, Motherwell, Aberdeen, Durham and ending in Stevenage on 29 May.

    People living on a private road in Newcastle are going to have their bins collected again, after a U-turn by the council, BBC Radio Stoke has learnt. 

    For two months people living on The Laburnums, Heath Grove in Loggerheads had to take waste and recycling to the end of their street.

    Newcastle Borough Council had stopped collecting from some private roads after one of its lorries nearly toppled over due to the state of the road.

    A spokesman for the council said: "Following further discussions with the residents of Heath Grove the council is pleased that it has been possible to agree a practical solution that meets the specific needs of residents in this particular location and ensures that residents are aware of their responsibilities to ensure that the council's teams and equipment are safeguarded."

    Ambulance services across England have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds to ensure vehicles can cope with a growing number of obese patients.

    Bariatric ambulances are specially designed and equipped in response to a 10-fold spike in hospital visits linked to obesity in the past decade

    The number of admissions has increased from 52,000 in 2006 to 520,000 in 2016.

    At West Midlands Ambulance Service, all of its 420 A&E ambulances are "bariatric capable", but there are eight specialist vehicles and seven on the way, costing £114,000 each.
