  3. Your questions: Is Hanley a town or Stoke-on-Trent's city centre?published at 14:19 British Summer Time 16 May 2017

    Allen Cook
    BBC Local Live

Kevin Hall asked on Your Questions: "Why can't we agree on how to describe Hanley/the city centre/Stoke-on-Trent? It is so confusing."

Oh Kevin, you know how to open a can of worms - this all really starts with the city of Stoke-on-Trent beginning as six towns which were then federated into the city in1910.

At that time, all of them fought their corner to be the leading district before eventually it was decided that no town should claim the right to be the leading one.

Is this in Hanley or the city centre?

But over recent years, with Hanley gaining the main shopping centre, there were calls in 2009 for Hanley to be officially renamed the City Centre.

The city council now says, while they focus on all six towns, they recognise the "wider role of the city centre" and are happy to call Hanley by that name.

So in answer Kevin, call it both Hanley and the city centre.
