    The unemployment rate in the West Midlands has risen by 6,000, bringing the total number of unemployed people to 166,000.

    According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), that equates to 5.9% of the West Midlands population being out of work.

    Nationally, UK unemployment fell by 64,000 to 1.49 million in the three months to May.

    It meant the unemployment rate fell to its lowest since 1975, at 4.5%, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) added.

    JCB says earnings grew by over a third last year despite challenging market conditions.

    The Staffordshire-based manufacturer says earnings last year rose to £287m compared with £214m the year before.

    JCB Chairman Lord Bamford says the global construction market in 2017 so far is buoyant and they'll continue to launch new products to secure more growth going forward.

    An investigation into the death of a woman on the A38 near Burton last week is "ongoing" and police say they are struggling to identify her.

    A 39-year-old man has been charged with breaching a restraining order and is due to appear at Stafford Crown Court on 11 August.

    He was also arrested on suspicion of murder, police say, but has been released pending further investigation.

    She was struck by a car on the A38 on 6 July after leaving the man's vehicle.

    At 11:30 today he'll made a Master of the University - for bringing distinction to his sport and inspiring others.

    Motorway bosses say clearing up litter by the carriageways in Cheshire contribute to a tax-payer bill totalling millions of pounds.

    Highways England collected 40,000 sacks of litter from motorways in the north west of England last year - at a cost of £1.6m.

    A woman from Tamworth has claimed a world record for the most amount of people bouncing on their own mini trampolines at the same time.

    Jenny Belcher, was invited to take up the challenge in Singapore, by the government there.

    She managed to organise 375 people to bounce at the same time for five minutes at a fitness fair.

    A Staffordshire man says people suffering a mental health crisis are still being locked up - or sent miles away for care. That's despite a change in the law earlier this year to prevent people being kept by police.

    Grant Williams, from Clayton, who had a family member previously locked up - claims it's because North Staffs Combined Healthcare only has one crisis bed.

  15. Care home fined £50,000 for breaching fire safety regulationspublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 11 July 2017

    A care home company has been fined a total of £50,000 and ordered to pay £9,000 in costs after pleading guilty to serious breaches of fire safety regulations.

    There were found to be two breaches of the regulations at Cypress Court Care Home on Broad Street in Crewe.

    In each instance they were ordered to pay £25,000 by Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts in Liverpool.

    It follows a fire safety audit on 7 March 2016 following a complaint from a relative of a resident who had concerns.

    Concerns related to fire detection and warning and means of escape and evacuation procedures, all of which fire officers said put the lives of people at risk of death or serious injury.

    A painting of Lichfield Cathedral by Joseph Turner has been sold for £310,000.

    The watercolour was bequeathed to the cathedral from a private collection.

    More than 20,000 people came to see it when it was put on display a few weeks ago.

    The money will be used to help preserve the building for future generations.

    A mum and daughter from Stoke-on-Trent remain in a serious but stable condition after they were hit by a reversing car near Sandbach.

    The three-year-old and her 32-year-old mother from Bradeley were injured on Saturday afternoon at Wheelock Hall Farm.

    Police say the car was being driven by an 89-year-old man.

    Officers say no arrests have been made, and they're continuing to investigate what happened.
