  4. Councillor suspended by group after 'sexual remark to elf'published at 13:00 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    A Stoke-on-Trent councillor who made a 'sexual remark' about a woman dressed as an elf has been suspended from his group for 12 months.

    Richard Broughan was found guilty of misconduct by the authority's standards committee last month after the comment made at Abbey Hulton's Christmas Lights' Switch On in December 2015.

    He had also been drinking in an alcohol restriction zone.

    He's been suspended by the City Independents' leader Dave Conway - who's also the leader of the city council itself - until next year.

    Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a large fire at Hanley's former bus station this morning.

    Staffordshire Police says the 35-year-old and 23-year-old men were detained at the scene and are in custody as investigations continue.

    The fire on Old Hall Street started at about 3:45am and has caused a significant amount of damage. One firefighter was injured whilst tackling the fire when the floor collapsed and he fell through it.

    Plans to reinstate an historic railway line between Leekbrook and Cornhill in the Staffordshire Moorlands move a step closer today.

    Money's already been allocated by the Moorlands District Council to Churnet Valley Railway to help bring the heritage line back in to use.

    Under the plans Leekbrook station will be reopened as an exact replica of the 19th century station building demolished in the 1940s.

    Today councillors are set to formally authorise the submission of a planning application to reinstate the line - which bosses say could attract an extra thirty thousand visitors a year to the Churnet Valley Railway.

  10. Dogs bitten by snakes on Cannock Chasepublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    A dog was attacked by a venomous snake while walking in Cannock Chase, his owner has revealed.

    Mark Wallin had to take his cocker spaniel Mylo for treatment after being bitten on the face by an adder.

    Last week, a vets in the town treated three other dogs with similar injuries sustained on the Chase.

    An investigation has now started into the cause of a fire at the site of the former bus station in Hanley this morning.

    Crews from Hanley, Burslem & Newcastle were called to Old Hall Street at about quarter past four this morning.

    Action is going to be taken to secure a field in Newcastle which has been visited by travellers twice in the last month, according to Staffordshire County Council.

    Eight vans appeared on Baldy's Field near to Wolstanton High School over the weekend.

    A firefighter was hurt when he fell through a floor while tackling a fire at Hanley's old bus station.

    He was treated in hospital after falling through a floor which had been partially burnt away around 6am.
