  3. Firefighters delayed due to parked carspublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 22 August 2017

    Chris King
    Reporter, BBC Radio Stoke

Staffordshire Fire Service says it was delayed in reaching the scene of a fire in Stoke-on-Trent at the weekend because parked cars blocked the route.

Longton firefighters were sent to a house on Dorcas Drive in Blurton after an emergency call where the people living there said a grill pan was on fire.

But the crew struggled to get to the property due to the number of parked cars on surrounding streets - and firefighters ended up getting off the fire engine and had to walk.

We believe a lot of the inconsiderate parking was due to the Stoke City football match that was taking place that day. Our fire engines need about three metres to safely travel down a road, so motorists need to consider this before they just park their car anywhere.”

  15. Home care users 'overcharged' by councilpublished at 08:36 British Summer Time 22 August 2017

    James Bovill
    Staffordshire Political Reporter, BBC News

An independent review has revealed hundreds of people who receive care at home in Stoke on Trent could have been overcharged by the city council.

The care of five people was investigated - one of them was supposed to receive two 30-minute care visits a day, but the vast majority were shorter than that - many less than 15 minutes.

The review by KPMG found 366 credit notes totalling nearly £200,000 were issued to people who overpaid for care.

The auditors say carers should be paid by the minute or in smaller chunks, but Stoke-on-Trent City council says care providers won't agree to it.

The council says it's overhauling its social care IT systems to improve accuracy - but that's been delayed until next year.
