    Bury St Edmunds-based racing driver Matt Carberry is being tipped for more success at the Superstox European Championship, external this weekend.

    The 36-year-old won the event for a third time last year, in his first race back after a six-month break from the sport.

    "You can never discount Matt and on his day nobody can compete with him, but there will be lots of drivers eager to win this weekend," said Dean Cox of Spedeworth Motorsports.

    Ahead of tomorrow's fight at Braintree Leisure Centre against an as-yet-unnamed opponent, Suffolk boxer Billy Bird says he is eyeing up a rematch with the only man who has beaten him in the professional ranks.

    Last year's defeat to Mike Byles in Bethnal Green came as a big surprise to the 23-year-old, and he is keen to set the record straight.

    "Within the next 16 months I would like to have a big title fight," said Bird. "But after this one tomorrow I would like a rematch with Byles, and I'm sure his team would be up for that as well."

    Matt Carberry, from Bury St Edmunds, will be aiming to take the title for the second year running, and the fourth time in total.

    "This is one of our longest-standing titles for Superstox. It always throws up a tremendous race," said Dean Cox of Spedeworth Motorsports.

    A leading supporter of East Anglian devolution says Cambridgeshire has a "superiority complex", after councillors in the county proposed their own alternative deal.

    Leaders in Cambridgeshire are proposing having two authorities - one for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and another for Norfolk and Suffolk - rather than a single authority.

    They say this would be more manageable and address "concerns" over establishing an elected mayor for East Anglia.

    But one councillor in favour of the existing deal told me they are just "cherry-picking".

    The 23-year-old, who has won all but one of his 14 professional bouts to date, competes for an International Challenge Belt at Braintree Leisure Centre against an as-yet-unnamed opponent.

    "It's a fight I have wanted for a while now and to headline a big event which all my home fans can easily get to is a dream come true," Bird said.

    The battle for devolution in East Anglia has taken another turn, with council leaders in Cambridgeshire writing to the government to propose an alternative deal.

    In the so-called "brother and sister" deal, instead of a single combined authority and a mayor, there would be two - one for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and one for Norfolk and Suffolk. 

    But the suggestion has not been well received by supporters of full East Anglian devolution.

    Local government minister James Wharton recently told MPs the government had no plans to consider any other deals.

    A man has been released by police after being questioned over a possible sexual assault in Bury St Edmunds in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    Officers spent the day investigating and reviewing CCTV in the area of Parkway. 

    The 35-year-old will have no action taken against him.

    A British Islamist extremist faces life in prison when he's sentenced later for planning a terror attack on American airbases in Suffolk.

    Delivery driver Junead Khan, 25, used his job as cover so he could scout US airbases including RAF Lakenheath.

    He will be sentenced at London's Kingston Crown Court after being found guilty of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts between May and July last year.

    Police say an in-depth investigation has begun to trace the driver of a vehicle who failed to stop following a collision in Bungay.

    A male pedestrian, thought to be in his 40s and from the local area, was originally taken to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, but has since been transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, with multiple injuries, including a fractured pelvis and fractured ribs.

    The collision took place at about 01:40 in Bridge Street in the town.

    Suffolk Coastal, external council says it has "learnt from the experience" of an unauthorised travellers' camp last year in Kesgrave, near Ipswich.

    Last night the authority's scrutiny committee discussed a review of the way the situation was handled, which included a comment from the police saying the council could have done more to support residents.

    Travellers arrived on land at the Grange Farm estate last June, staying for nearly a month. Their removal, and the clean-up afterwards, cost more than £8,000.

  20. Concerns grow for missing man from Lowestoftpublished at 09:46

    Suffolk Police's helicopter is to be called in to help search for an elderly man who has gone missing from a caravan park in Lowestoft.

    William Robinson was last seen at the Beeches Caravan Park on Victoria Road yesterday afternoon at about 15:30. 

    The force says it has already used dogs to search the area for the 84-year-old who doesn't usually walk far because he's partially-sighted and needs a cane.
