    Thousands of lightning strikes were recorded overnight as flooding left rail users travelling from Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk with long delays on Thursday morning.  

    "Across southeast England, East Anglia and northern France overnight, we had just under 7,000 lightning strikes averaging about 1,000 strikes per hour," said BBC Weather's Carol Kirkwood.

    "Conditions are now improving... but there will be more thunderstorms and torrential downpours later this afternoon."

    Weatherquest's, external Chris Bell says the outlook for sunnier spells isn't brilliant for the next month. 

    The company, based in Norwich, provides long term 28-day forecasts... and the outlook is not good.

    Chris said: "The area of high pressure that normally brings us a settled spell every once in a while, that's down near the Azores.

    "There's no sign of that settling in to southern Britain any time soon, so I think we've going to remain in a fairly changeable pattern."

    The inquest into the death of Felixstowe woman Jean Ryan is due to open in Ipswich this morning.

    Mrs Ryan, 67, from Gosford Way, was pronounced dead on 13 April after a distress call was made at 22:30.

    Her husband, 61-year-old Shaun Ryan, of the same address, has been charged with her murder.

    I'll bring you news from the inquest shortly.

    Ipswich Town's Daryl Murphy started for the Republic of Ireland as they beat Italy 1-0 to reach the knock-out stage of Euro 2016 last night.

    The 33-year-old played the first 70 minutes before being replaced by Everton's Aiden McGeady.

    Norwich City's Robbie Brady scored in the 85th minute to set up a game against the hosts France, in Lyon, on Sunday.

    Ipswich Witches, external have just confirmed that tonight's home meeting against Newcastle Diamonds, external has been called off because of the rain.

    All being well, the Suffolk side will return to action at Plymouth, external tomorrow night.

    The polls opened at 07:00 for people to vote in the EU Referendum - where voters will decide whether the country should remain a member of the European Union or leave.

    It's only the third nationwide referendum in UK history - the last one was five years ago when voters rejected a change to the way MPs are elected, and the first was the 1975 referendum on membership of what was then called the European Economic Community.

    Polling stations close at 22:00 and counting begins shortly afterwards.

    In common with other broadcasters, the BBC is limited in what it can report while polls are open, but you can follow the results as they come in across the BBC after polls close tonight.

    Greater Anglia, external has reported flooding on the railway at Manor Park in London, which is affecting rail services through Suffolk.

    Any trains services running through Manor Park may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes, or revised.

    This includes train services between Liverpool Street and Ipswich and Norwich, so commuters should expect short notice alterations, delays and cancellations.

    The disruption is expected to last until at least 10:00.
