    That's it from the Suffolk team for today.

    Our main story has been the news that thirteen men are to face charges in connection with an attack which left a football fan from Mildenhall with brain damage.

    Simon Dobbin, 41, suffered a serious head injury during the fracas between fans outside the Railway Pub in East Street, Southend in March last year.

  3. Elderly cyclist receives injuries in hit-and-run collision in Becclespublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 25 July 2016

    An elderly female cyclist received serious injuries and was taken to the James Paget Hospital, after a fail-to-stop collision with a car on Peddars Lane in Beccles yesterday morning.

    Suffolk Police, external said the car, described as a small, dark coloured hatchback, is alleged to have left in the direction of Bungay and may have damage to its front nearside wing or bonnet.

    They'd like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who may have dashcam footage taken in the area at about 09:45, when the crash took place.

  4. Fatality at Needham Market railway stationpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 25 July 2016

    British Transport Police officers have been called to Needham Market rail station following reports of a person being struck by a train.  

    The call came into police at 15:53. Officers attended the scene alongside paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service.  

    A person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers will now work to establish the identity of the person and inform their family. 

    The incident is not being treated as suspicious.  A file will be prepared for the coroner.

    Waveney and Suffolk Coastal district councils are holding a joint meeting tonight, external to discuss the creation of a combined local authority for east Suffolk.

    A report to the meeting is recommending a full merger, which would see the creation of an authority spanning the area from Lowestoft to Felixstowe, and which it's claimed would save around £1.3m a year.

    If councillors agree with the recommendation, the next step would be to go to public consultation in November.

    It was a sight for sore eyes as Ipswich Town, external striker David McGoldrick belatedly made his first appearance of the pre-season at the weekend.

    The 28-year-old, who missed large chunks of last season through various injuries, had been laid low by a hip problem, but came on for the last 31 minutes of Saturday's 1-1 draw at Cambridge.

    "It was great, lovely to see him out there," said manager Mick McCarthy. "That's his first 30 minutes in a long time, so let's hope we can keep him on the pitch. That'd be great."

    Ipswich Town's, external recent signing Adam Webster isn't expected to be ready to face Barnsley on the opening day of the Championship season.

    The 21-year-old's been nursing an ankle injury since he arrived from Portsmouth, and only returned to action in last week's win at Colchester United.

    Manager Mick McCarthy can't see him being available for 6 August: "Probably not, after 13 weeks out. We've only got two weeks until the start and two 90 minute games to get in."

    Firefighters from Ipswich have rescued a baby who'd become locked in a hot car. 

    The alarm was raised shortly after 13:00 and the fire service says the child was trapped in the vehicle in Speedwell Road for around 15 minutes. 

    The baby, who is only 10 weeks old, wasn't thought to be seriously hurt and did not require hospital treatment.

    The fire service said the mother had accidentally managed to lock the baby in the vehicle and could not get the doors open.

    Michael Maitland says he's now well and happy, but admits that it's taken years: "It takes a long time to overcome something as bad as that and I obviously still have to keep fighting it and working on it every day.

    "It's definitely not quick fix if you're that deep in it".

    His father Iain added that he's very proud of how Michael has turned his life around, saying: "Only this week he was saying he's started an apprenticeship - onwards and upwards."

    Iain Maitland, who lives in Felixstowe, says for a long time they ignored the changes when their son Michael, who had developed anorexia, came back from university.

    He said: "Michael did get thinner and for a long time we ignored it.

    "We just thought it was him growing up and changing the colour of his hair and I think Michael didn't want us to know he was depressed and becoming anorexic.

    "We were always a very happy, normal, jolly family and then suddenly to find this terrible thing, anorexia, to the point where he was ending up in hospital and rehab, was so far beyond the realms of what we'd ever known or could have expected that we just didn't believe it was happening to us."

    A Felixstowe man who developed depression and almost died of anorexia while he was at the University of East Anglia in Norwich says there was no "set reason" why it happened.

    Michael Maitland (pictured) said: "There was just a gradual process and I wasn't even aware of it at first. I never had a problem with how I looked or anything like that. I think it was more a mood thing."

    Correspondence between Michael and his father Iain Maitland is now being published in a book called Dear Michael, Love Dad.

    Speaking about the letters, Michael added: "I'd read them at first in the beginning stages, but towards the end I was getting really depressed ... I just ignored my dad."

    The correspondence between a Felixstowe man and his son, who was at university in Norfolk and suffering from severe depression and anorexia, has formed the basis of a book which is being published later this week.

    Iain Maitland says: "When Michael went to university I started writing letters and later emails, just full of stuff and nonsense about things that were happening at home, making jokes and of course whilst that was all happening Michael was falling into depression and anorexia.

    "There was lots of me shouting at him and 'when are you going to get a job' and 'you know how much all this is costing us' and things like that, and whilst that was happening, Michael was sinking lower and lower."

    After scoring 37 goals in two seasons and impressing for the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2016, Ipswich Town, external boss Mick McCarthy isn't surprised to see Daryl Murphy being linked to other clubs.

    Last week the 33-year-old was said to be interesting Fulham and Newcastle United, according to the national press.

    "I've not had any calls about Daryl, but that doesn't mean to say there isn't interest because he's a good player and had a good European Championship," said McCarthy.

    "I sincerely hope not, and by the way, he's on a long contract with us so we don't have to sell anybody. That's the discussion I've had with Marcus [Evans, club owner] today."

    Ipswich Town, external boss Mick McCarthy says he's had no contact from anyone regarding defender Tommy Smith.

    With just a year to go on his current contract rumours last week suggested the 26-year-old is interesting Championship rivals Fulham, Blackburn and Reading. 

    McCarthy said: "Nobody's made a phone call to me about him. We're in negotiations with him [about a new deal], but where they are at, I'm not sure."
