    Katherine Rednall will attempt to reach the women's singles final at the World Indoor Bowls Championships, external for the third time today.

    The 21-year-old, from Baylham, plays Worcestershire's Amy Stanton at 19.30 tonight. 

    Rednall, who won the event at the first attempt in 2014 and was runner-up a year later, beat Rebecca Field in the last-eight.

    Stanton caused an upset by beating Karen Murphy of Australia in a tie-break set.

    Tonight it will be cold and cloudy, with a widespread sharp frost, perhaps a little drizzle or very light snow. Later in the night the cloud may break, with clear spells by dawn.

    Repair work, which started yesterday morning, will continue all this week at Orford Ness.

    The Orfordness Lighthouse Trust, external hopes to install another three shingle-filled "sausage rolls", and clear up the residue of the barrages that have done their job to protect the structure.

  4. Hopes Great East Run could become a full marathon and 'go over Orwell Bridge'published at 13:44 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2017

    The councillor in charge of health in the county hopes the new Great East Run will expand and eventually go over the Orwell Bridge. 

    Tony Goldson, cabinet member for health at Suffolk County Council, said: "In a few years' time it'll grow from a half marathon to a full marathon, and that's my ambition, to see the full marathon.

    "Let's get over that Orwell Bridge, let's have runners going over it.

    "I know it's going to cause problems, we can overcome all these issues, nothing is insurmountable in this world."

    The Great Run Company will organise the rebranded Ipswich half marathon in September, having teamed up with the county and borough councils and Ipswich JAFFA Running Club.

    It already stages events in 15 locations around the country, and is best known for the Great North Run, which is the world's biggest half marathon, with 57,000 entrants.

    The Great East Run, on 24 September, will start and finish in Ipswich town centre.

    The Ipswich half marathon has had a rebrand and a new route. 

    Now coined the Great East Run, external, the route will take runners around the Waterfront, along Wherstead Road and under the Orwell Bridge on 24 September.

    Alison Beech, chair of Ipswich JAFFA Running Club, said: "This will enable us to help take the Ipswich half marathon to the next level which will benefit our club, the town and most especially the runners."

  7. 'Sausage rolls' to bolster sea defences at lighthousepublished at 11:04 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2017

    Repair work to improve the defences at the Orfordness Lighthouse is under way.

    The Orfordness Lighthouse Trust made 2016 the final year that it would be open to visitors due to the state of the eroded beach.

    In a statement, the trust said: "We decided that the lighthouse had fared so well that it would be worthwhile to do some repair work to bolster the sea defences, or the bags of shingle wrapped in geo-textile material, otherwise known as 'sausage rolls'."

    A spokesman for the trust said the recent tidal surge had not made things worse.

    "As far as the lighthouse is concerned it had a positive outcome - shingle was deposited high on the beach above the normal high-water mark," he said.

    Repair work started yesterday morning, and will continue all week.

  8. Wild boar stock to double, despite claims they're a 'danger to children'published at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2017

    A business has been given permission to double its number of wild boar, despite fears that they are "a danger to children".

    The New England Boar Company, which is based near Haverhill on the border of Suffolk and Essex, already has permission to keep 55 of the animals - but wants to up the number to 131.

    But a residents' group objected to the plans, saying: "Wild boar are a danger to children, pet dogs and the general public utilising the space around the wood."

    Toby Wilson Waterworth, a campaigner who was at the meeting at Braintree District Council last night, said: "There did seem to be, we felt, a more favoured response towards the applicant, than actually was interested in hearing the concerns of the residents who turned up."

    The New England Boar Company has so far been unavailable for comment.

    A 22-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the death of a cyclist in Newmarket has been bailed by police. 

    The cyclist died after being involved in a crash with a BMW car on Barbara Stradbroke Avenue yesterday.

    The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and has been bailed to return to police in April.

    A former health chief says he's "incredulous" as to why a patient stayed in hospital for two and a half years.

    Adriano Guedes, who suffers paralysis after a stroke, was evicted from the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston last week, after being admitted on mental health grounds in 2014.

    The James Paget said he was made repeated offers of accommodation, but he always turned them down. Mr Guedes said he wanted to move to a "wheelchair-friendly place". 

    He's now living in a council flat in Suffolk and says he's been on hunger strike since 10 January.

    Roy Lilley, a former NHS trust chairman for Surrey who's now a health commentator, says it was a "difficult" issue for the hospital, but there was "a lot of dots here that we can't join up".

    "He's got an on-going health need," he said. "This is a responsibility for the health service, paid for by the clinical commissioning group who will be well used to dealing with this kind of case although it's rare.

    "I'm incredulous to understand why it's not been resolved in two years."

    Leiston, external have suffered their first defeat of 2017, going down 1-0 at Wingate & Finchley in the Ryman Premier Division, external last night.

    The result ends the Suffolk side's five-match winning run and means they remain fourth in the table, six points off the top, although they do have two games in hand.

    "I'm more disappointed with the performance than the result," said boss Glenn Driver. "It just wasn't acceptable from a team of our quality, we've carried too many people tonight."

    A dry but cold evening and night, with dense freezing fog patches forming.

    The fog will become widespread overnight, with ice on untreated surfaces becoming an additional hazard. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning, with the potential for travel disruption.

    Fog will lift into low level cloud, and it'll remain cloudy with some brighter spells.

    Council tax-payers face a 3% rise, as we predicted earlier today.

    It's to fund adult social care. 

    Today's county council cabinet meeting also decided to take £8.5m out of its reserves while also cutting £31m in spending.

    The full council will vote on these decisions when it meets next month.

  18. Criticism of Sizewell C consultationpublished at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2017

    We're always keen to receive your emails, so thanks to Nicholas Cooper, who's written from Theberton, near Leiston, about the current consultation into Sizewell C, external.

    "4 years between Consultation Stage 1 and Consultation Stage 2 and EDF have taken no notice of the concerns of the local residents," he writes.

    "If anything they have added to the concerns of residents with no mitigation. 

    "The Stage 2 consultation document was no consultation, just a sales exercise."

    Mr Cooper's comments come after Suffolk Coastal Council and Suffolk County Councils said they could not support the development, external of Sizewell C based on the information currently available from EDF Energy.

    They say they support the principle of a new nuclear power station, but that there is more work to be done to mitigate concerns over such a major development. 

    The councils will meet at the end of this month to discuss their joint report responding to the current consultation.

  19. 'Flog It' comes to the countypublished at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2017

    Glemham Hall, near Woodbridge, is to play host to the BBC One antiques programme Flog It! next month.

    Members of the public are invited to visit the stately home on 23 February with up to three antiques or collectables they might be interested in selling. 

    Once valued the owner and a team of experts decide whether an object is filmed and gets sent to Clarke and Simpson Auctions in Campsea Ashe for inclusion in its sale on Wednesday 15 March.     

    The BBC is making four editions of the show featuring Glemham Hall, which will be transmitted within 18 months of recording.

  20. Charity gets involved in hunt for Corrie Mckeaguepublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2017

    The charity Missing People, external has joined in the search for RAF Honington serviceman Corrie Mckeague, who hasn't been seen since the early hours of 24 September.

    Suffolk Police say they're "liaising" with the charity.
