    It was back in December that poultry keepers were told to keep their birds inside for 30 days, or take steps to separate them from wild birds, to protect them from the highly-infectious strain of avian flu in Europe.

    The H5N8 bird flu strain had been found in poultry and wild birds in 14 countries including Germany and France.

    The main clinical signs, external of the more serious type of bird flu (highly pathogenic avian influenze or HPAI) are:

    • Swollen head
    • Blue discolouration of neck and throat
    • Loss of appetite
    • Respiratory distress
    • Diarrhoea
    • Fewer eggs laid
    • Increased mortality

    DEFRA says that clinical signs can vary between species of bird, and some species (ducks and geese) may show minimal clinical signs.

  2. Fire crews spend night at scene of major house firepublished at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2017

    Firefighters have spent the night at the scene of a major house fire near Lakenheath.

    It broke out at a property in Sedge Fen, close to the borders of Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, just before 20:00 last night.

    Crews from the three counties attended and at its height more than 35 firefighters were at the scene. 

    The blaze took about five hours to put out and crews are still there. 

    Suffolk Police, external has also been in attendance and the scene has been cordoned off while an investigation is carried out. 

    Police have said that nobody is unaccounted for, but have not confirmed whether there have been any casualties.

    The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) says the H5N8 strain of avian flu, which has been confirmed at a poultry farm at Redgrave on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, has been found in both wild and farmed birds in the UK.

    Avian influenza (bird flu) is an infectious disease of birds. Public Health England, external says the risk to public health is very low and human infections with avian influenza are rare.

    The Food Standards Agency, external says there is no food safety risk for UK consumers, explaining that "thoroughly cooked poultry and poultry products, including eggs, are safe to eat".

  4. Poultry producers will be 'quite disappointed' at avian flu outbreakpublished at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2017

    A poultry specialist from the National Farmers Union says he thinks producers will be "quite disappointed" at the news of an outbreak of the H5N8 strain of avian flu, external.

    John Newton said: "While outbreaks of this new strain were going on in the country before Christmas... there's been none in poultry in East Anglia nor has there been any found in any of the wild waterfowl in the region up until now.

    "I think producers will be quite disappointed that all the steps they've been taking to keep the disease out of the region appear not to have worked in this particular instance."

  5. Investigations continue into avian flu outbreakpublished at 08:22 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2017

    Investigations are continuing into an outbreak of avian flu at a farm on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, where 23,000 birds have either died or are in the process of being humanely culled.

    Bridge Farm, in Redgrave near Diss, is managed by Banham Poultry, who say it doesn't produce meat but is a "breeder" farm. 

    They say: "The infection was confirmed after we notified the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs following increasing mortality in one of our flocks. 

    "They will now be humanely culled by the authorities in accordance with EU legislation. 

    "The specific strain of influenza has yet to be identified and further tests will need to be carried out by the authorities before this can be confirmed. 

    "Birds at our other farms appear healthy and there is no evidence of any spread of infection."

    Ryman Premier League side AFC Sudbury, external have been charged by the FA for failing to control their players in an orderly fashion. 

    It relates to a match against Hendon FC on 21 January which was abandoned close to full time after a number of players clashed.

    Hendon FC have also been charged with the same breach, with Hendon coach David Smallsey also charged for his role in the incident.

    I've contacted the Ryman League for comment, and will bring you further details as and when I get them.

    Following the announcement from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs that about 23,000 birds will be culled at a poultry farm at Redgrave on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, they have also issued some advice, external.

    Avian flu has been diagnosed at a poultry unit and a 10km temporary control zone has been set up around it.

  17. Cliff collapse inquest hears of 'massive multiple injuries'published at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2017

    The inquest into the death of a man who died after a cliff collapsed at Thorpeness has been hearing he died of "massive multiple injuries".

    Brendan Lavery, of Ingham near Bury St Edmunds, was killed when he was walking his dog on the beach on 14 January, and the sandy-soil cliff slipped.

    The inquest in Ipswich has been opened and adjourned today.

    Coroner Kevin McCarthy described it as a "major tragedy".

    The inquest is due to resume in June.

  18. Controls in place for bird flu outbreakpublished at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2017

    A 10km (6 mile) temporary control zone has been introduced around a poultry premises near Redgrave in Suffolk on the border with Norfolk, following an investigation into a suspected case of H5N8 avian influenza.

    The affected premises is estimated to contain approximately 23,000 birds, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

    A number have died and it has been decided to cull the remaining birds. 

    Further investigations continue into the nature of the virus detected and to establish the possible source of the infection.

    National League Two club Bury St Edmunds, external have re-signed nine players for next season.

    Chris Snelling, Sean Stapleton, Tom Rock, Matt Edison, Sam Bixby, Liam McBride, Dave Micklethwaite, Matt Selby and David Coutts have all agreed new deals.  

    Discussions are ongoing with other Wolfpack players and the club hopes to announce more contract extensions within the next few weeks.
