  2. Motorcyclist dies after crash on Fridaypublished at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    A motorcyclist has died as a result of injuries he had after he hit a fence in Brandon on Friday afternoon.

    The accident happened shortly before 17:15 at a property on Green Road near to the junction with Blackbird Avenue.

    The man, who is in his 50s but is not being named by Suffolk Police, died in Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on Sunday.

    Police are appealing for witnesses.

    Congratulations to Tundra, who on Friday night were crowned winners of this year's BurySOUND competition, external at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds.

    Overcoming competition from Goldblume, Maverick, Stretch Soul Gang and Ugly, the band were voted best of the bunch by a panel of judges with experience in the music industry.

    Their prizes include studio time, tour van hire, music equipment and mentoring opportunities.

    Seymour Quigley, one of the organisers of the competition, said: "BurySOUND 2017 was the biggest in the competition's 19-year history.

    "We received more applications, held more heats and included more bands than ever before.

    "The number of local businesses and music experts wanting to sponsor, support and/or judge the competition was overwhelming and wonderful, and the sheer quality of music on offer was staggering to say the least."

    Cambridge United's 1-1 draw with Colchester United at the weekend was not without its troubles, as three men were arrested at the match.

    Two men, 19 and 20, both from Colchester, were arrested on suspicion of going on the playing area at a football match, say Cambridgeshire Police police.

    They were later charged and released on bail to appear at Cambridge Magistrates Court on 21 March.

    A 17-year-old boy from Ipswich was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firework at a sporting event.

    He was later charged and released on bail to appear at the same court on March 22.

  5. Air quality figures 'need to spark action'published at 15:01 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    A doctor has called for action after figures have revealed "unsafe" levels of pollution.

    Data from local councils - put together by  Defra, external  - shows there were unsafe levels of nitrogen dioxide at 24 sites across Suffolk in 2015.

    Areas highlighted included the taxi rank in Newmarket, the roundabouts on Norwich Road in Ipswich and Cross Street in Sudbury. 

    The  World Health Organization, external  estimates more than nine in 10 people across the globe breathe polluted air. 

    Dr Simon Rudland, from the Suffolk GP Federation and a partner at Stowhealth in Stowmarket, said: "It's so frustrating because we're asking people to be more active and to be more out-and-about, then they do that and they're exposed to fumes which affect their respiratory health.

    "It's good we're having these conversations, but from these conversations we need some action to improve the quality of air."

  6. Charity fund-raising for county's first lymphoma psychologist published at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    A charity says a psychologist could make a big difference for people with cancer in Norfolk.

    The Lymphoma Association, external wants to raise £20,000 to pay for the post for the county.

    Lymphoma is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, after breast, lung, colon and prostate cancers. It is the most common form of blood cancer.   

    The charity's chief executive, Jonathan Pearce, says a lot of people would be given extra help to deal with the mental health aspects of the disease. 

    "We're hoping that once up-and-running we can support about 120 people in the first year and that will show the evidence that this makes a real difference," said Mr Pearce.

    "We've already been told by the patients we've supported in the past that there's a gap in NHS services around clinical psychology."

  7. Disruption to rail servicespublished at 14:22 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    Trains between Norwich and London are currently being cancelled after someone was hit by a train.

    It happened near Chelmsford. 

    Greater Anglia says services may be back to normal, but is urging people to check before they travel. 

    So far four services have been cancelled.

  8. 'Help reduce pollution in our town', says borough councilpublished at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    Work is being done to reduce pollution levels in Ipswich, according to the borough council.

    As we've been reporting, figures published by Defra show there were unsafe levels of nitrogen dioxide at 24 sites across Suffolk in 2015.

    Identified areas included the taxi rank in Newmarket and Cross Street in Sudbury plus around the Chevallier Street/Valley Road/Norwich Road mini roundabouts in Ipswich.

    Phil Smart, Ipswich Borough Council, external 's cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "There's a responsibility on us all to think very carefully about our travel choices.

    "If we can improve public transport and make that more attractive, or locate housing where people live near enough to Ipswich to be able to use alternatives to the car, such as walking or cycling, these are all measures that can help."

    Twenty four places across Suffolk have been recorded as breaching EU air pollution limits, according to latest figures from 2015.

    The information published by the  Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, external  (Defra) shows there were unsafe levels of nitrogen dioxide.

    Particular problems were said to be at the taxi rank in Newmarket, Cross Street in Sudbury (pictured) and four areas in Ipswich. 

    It comes as the  World Health Organization, external  warns air pollution is " one of the most pernicious threats " facing global public health today.

    Phil Smart, Ipswich Borough Council's cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "There's no point admitting traffic in to the borough at any faster rate than the junctions within it can discharge that traffic.

    "So it's not about stopping people from coming in to Ipswich, but it's about managing how they flow in to the town to make sure, as far as we can, they don't queue."

    The Cardiff City midfielder scored his second Blues goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Brentford .

    "I don't think Emyr fits, in terms of Neil [Warnock, Cardiff manager]," said McCarthy. 

    "I've asked him and he said he'd be delighted to join us, so that's for another day.

    "We can't do anything about it now anyway, but at least for my planning I'd like to know if he's enjoying it... would he like to join if they want to release him?

    "But he's enjoying himself and says he'd love to come."

    Pawel Lewinski told Norwich Magistrates' Court: "Sorry, but I just pulled the throttle and it went. It's so easy."

    As well as the six-month ban, he has to pay £475 in costs and fines.

    Sentencing him, Paul Allen JP, said: "You have been a fool, to say the least.

    "It's wholly unacceptable on any road in this country - it might be acceptable on a German autobahn, but not here."

    The court heard Lewinski, a German, had been living in the UK for 11 years.

  12. Six-month ban for biker caught doing 130mphpublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    A motorcyclist has been banned from riding for six months after admitted to speeding on the A140 at 132mph (212 km/h).

    Pawel Lewinski, 36, from Wordsworth Road in Diss, was clocked by police on the dual carriageway at Scole, which has a 70mph (110km/h) speed limit.

    The German engineer, who works in Eye, was riding a Kawasaki ZX 1000 C2H at about 14:30 on Thursday, 18 August last year.

    He also admitted not having a valid driving licence. Norwich Magistrates' Court heard he had an EU licence, but prosecutors said drivers/riders have to apply for a UK one if they've lived here for more than a year.

  15. Landfill search for missing RAF airman beginspublished at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    A full-scale search of part of a landfill site for missing airman Corrie Mckeague has got under way.

    Police are trawling the site at Milton, near Cambridge, as  part of their investigation  to find the 23-year-old who has been missing since 24 September.

    The search is expected to take up to 10 weeks to complete.

    An area of 920 sq m (1,100 sq yd), and 8m (26ft) deep, of waste will be trawled through.

    Det Supt Katie Elliott, from  Suffolk Police, external , said: "Teams of specialist search-trained police officers from both Suffolk and Norfolk will be carrying out the work to find anything that may be linked to the investigation."

    Mr Mckeague, who was based at RAF Honington, went missing after a Friday night out with friends in Bury St Edmunds. He was last seen at about 03:25 on the Saturday morning.

    A man was arrested and bailed on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice  last week.

    I'm heading to Norwich Magistrates' Court where a motorcyclist is due to be sentenced after being clocked at 132mph on a dual carriageway.

    Pawel Lewinski, 36, from Wordsworth Road in Diss, has already admitted speeding on the A140 at Scole on 18 June last year.

    He's also admitted riding the Kawasaki ZX 1000 C2h without a valid licence.

    "He's trained for the last few days and has got a smile on his face and is feeling a lot better," said manager Mick McCarthy.

  18. Ipswich rape inquiry: Two men to appear at court over charges published at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    Two men have been charged in connection with the rape inquiry in Ipswich.

    George-Hari Constantinescu and Danut Gheorghe, both aged 29 and from the Woodbridge area, have been charged with attempted rape and kidnap.

    It is in connection with an incident on Rope Walk in the early hours of 25 February.

    A woman, in her 20s, was attacked and left unconscious.

    Both men are due to appear before Ipswich Magistrates' Court this afternoon.
