    Bury St Edmunds, external  director of rugby believes his side went a long way towards securing their National League Two South, external status with Saturday's victory at Barnes.

    The 43-31 success - Bury's second in a row - lifts them 10 points clear of the bottom two.

    "That puts us a couple of wins clear of the chasing pack," Gavin Hogg said. 

    "With just five games of the season to go it's going to take one of those sides to go on an unbeaten run to drag us back in.

    "We're on a good roll now with two wins and we've taken a lot of confidence from that, so it would be nice now to finish our season with a bit of momentum."

    In an attempt to increase his side's goal threat Ipswich Town, external boss Mick McCarthy admits he might break away from their current 3/5/2 formation.

    Although the system's helped Town go eight matches unbeaten, seven of those have been draws, with goals hard to come by.

    "We've had a good run with playing 3/5/2," McCarthy said after Saturday's stalemate at Barnsley . "We've not looked vulnerable, we've not looked like being beaten in a lot of games. 

    "But Tom Lawrence's rightful position is wide left, although he's scored from wide right today, although he'll pretty much score from everywhere on the pitch right now."

    The jury has retired to consider its verdict at the murder trial of a man accused of killing a Suffolk couple.

    The defendant, named by prosecutors as Ali Qazimaj, 43, denies killing Peter and Sylvia Stuart, from Weybread, Suffolk. 

    Mr Stuart, 75, was stabbed to death last June. The body of Mrs Stuart, 69, has never been found. They were last seen alive at Goodies Farm Shop in Pulham Market, Norfolk, on 29 May.

    The accused claims his name is Vital Dapi , that he is 44 years old, and is from the city of Elbasan in Albania. 

    He claims he was not in the UK at the time Mr and Mrs Stuart were killed. 

    It has been claimed his DNA and fingerprints were swapped with those of Ali Qazimaj because of "police corruption". 

    Mr Justice Stuart-Smith spent an hour going through the defence evidence at Ipswich Crown Court this morning before sending out the jury. He instructed the jury to return a unanimous verdict. 

  4. Police praise community spirit after armed robberypublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    Police have praised community spirit after an armed robbery at a shop in Stowmarket.

    As we've been reporting, there were reports of a man armed with an axe who had stolen a quantity of cash from a store on Ipswich Street on Sunday.

    An 18-year-old is due to appear at court today in connection with the incident. 

    A second teenager, also 18, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery. He has been released on police bail until 24 April.

  8. Boy, 13, on police bail over items thrown on A14published at 10:41 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    A 13-year-old boy has been arrested and bailed after objects were thrown onto the A14. 

    Police took a number of reports from motorists travelling along the east bound carriageway, near Copdock, between 12:20 and 12:50 on Saturday.

    The teenager was arrested and taken into custody for questioning. He has been bailed to return to police on 7 April.

    A multi-million pound vision for Ipswich's Cornhill has been backed by the town's MP.

    As  we've been reporting  this morning, a tower and a large ramp have been dropped from the  plans, external .

    The new design features a sculpture, water feature and four columns incorporating the history of the Cornhill.

    Ben Gummer, MP for Ipswich, said: "It's an exceptional design, very beautiful.

    "It's a significant improvement on the previous design, something more refined than the previous suggestion."

    He added: "I think most people will really appreciate what we're doing here. The difference is that retailers will want to come to the town even more than they are at the moment because we are investing in the town centre."

    After dominating the entire singles and album charts on Friday evening we asked;  Where next for Ed Sheeran?

    Well how about Winterfell, Dorne or perhaps (given his recent fictional run-in with some royals ) King's Landing?

    If you don't know what any of that means then you probably don't watch Game of Thrones... But maybe now you will, as the show's producers have confirmed Ed Sheeran will make a cameo appearance in the seventh series.

    Speaking at the SXSW film festival in Texas, David Benioff and Dan Weiss said they'd been trying to book the star for a while.

    Ed also confirmed the news by tweeting "guess the cat's out the bag".

    It's not clear what role he'll have in the show.

    We think he should be called The Chart Slayer. 

    And as one wag points out below; "Ginger... is coming."

    Ipswich Town, external boss Mick McCarthy believes Ben Morris's loan move to Woking will be beneficial to both clubs and the player himself.

    The 17-year-old joined the National League outfit on Saturday and made his debut as a substitute against Boreham Wood the same day.

    "Ben's a goalscorer and they wanted a goalscorer," said McCarthy. "They've got a couple of big lads up-front that can take the weight off him."

    "I said look he's only 17 but he's quick and he's a finisher and if he gets chances he'll score. It'll do him the world of good."

    Drivers and their passengers who don't "belt-up" are being targeted as part of a week-long enforcement campaign.

    Police officers from Norfolk and Suffolk will be carrying out checks across both counties and anyone who's found not "buckled-up" could face a fine or further action.

    During the last campaign, in October 2016, 52 people in Norfolk were caught driving without a seatbelt.

    A teenager is due in court this morning following an armed robbery at a shop in Stowmarket.

    Police were called to a shop on Ipswich Street shortly after 08:00 on Sunday, following reports a man armed with an axe had stolen a quantity of cash.

    An 18-year-old man from Stowmarket was arrested and has been charged with robbery and a drugs offence.

  15. Man in hospital following sea rescuepublished at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    A man is in hospital after being rescued from the sea near Lowestoft last night.

    Rescue teams from the coastguard and Gorleston RNLI found him 25m (82ft) off the coast at Corton at about 22:00.

    Paramedics were transported along the beach in coastguard vehicles to assess the male. He had been reported missing to Suffolk police.

    The man, who's in his 40's, was taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston.

    There was another much-needed win for Bury St Edmunds, external rugby players at the weekend.

    The Wolf Pack built on the previous weekend's success over Exmouth by winning 43-31 at Barnes.

    It was Bury's first away win since early January and has lifted them 10 points clear of the bottom two in National League Two South, external .

    Needham Market, external were left to rue a poor first half as they lost 3-1 at home to Enfield Town in the Ryman Premier Division, external  on Saturday.

    The Marketmen stay third in the table with Leiston, external just outside the play-off places after their 1-1 draw with leaders Bognor. 

    Lowestoft Town, external celebrated a fourth win in a row as they beat Kingstonian 1-0 while AFC Sudbury, external were thrashed 6-0 at high-flying Havant and Waterlooville.

    Bury Town, external scored late on to seal a 2-1 win at home to Tilbury in the North Division.

    Ipswich Town, external boss Mick McCarthy admitted his side was fortunate to draw 1-1 at Barnsley on Saturday .

    Tom Lawrence's 11th goal of the season, in the third minute of added on time, rescued a point for the Blues, who were second best for most of the game. 

    "It's the first thing I've stolen from here," said McCarthy. "I was here a long time and never took a paper-clip, pen, piece of paper or anything else, but we burgled a point today."

    "It's part of the game, the game goes for as long as the referee adds time on. We were poor today, they were much better."

    A tower and a large ramp have been dropped as part of plans, external to spend £3m transforming the appearance of the Cornhill in Ipswich.

    When they were first revealed , there was strong reaction from many people. A consultation on revamping the area has led to revised suggestions for the space.

    The new design is now described as more traditional. It will feature a sculpture, water feature and four columns incorporating the history of the Cornhill.
