    Suffolk darts player Peter Wright faces Belgium's Kim Huybrechts in Cardiff tonight as the Premier League, external season reaches the halfway point.

    The 46-year-old from Mendham was knocked off the top of the table when he lost to 16-times world champion Phil Taylor a week ago.

    World number one Michael van Gerwen currently leads the way, a point ahead of Wright, who is in second place.

    The Royal College of Nursing, external  (RCN) claims that as well the risk of nurses leaving the profession as a result of a 1% pay rise, external , there's also the possibility of more pressure on staffing levels because of Brexit.

    Sue Huggins, from the RCN in Suffolk, said: "The risk is that we could have EU nationals leaving the profession, and leaving the country and going back home.

    "At the moment we've got patients, and patient care and safety, at risk and the shortage of nurses could get worse."

  3. Garden Birdwatch results revealedpublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 30 March 2017

    Blackbirds were the most common species spotted by people in the county taking part in this year's RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, external .

    Emily Kench from the RSPB said: "It's quite surprising it took top spot from the blue tit who fell into fourth.

    "We think this is because so many more people have feeders in their gardens so it really shows that that helps with species like the blackbird."

    More than 11,000 people from the county took part this year.

    Across the UK, the house sparrow was the most-spotted bird.

  4. Police Federation says force must continue to call for helicopter support published at 13:29 British Summer Time 30 March 2017

    The chairman of the Suffolk Police Federation, external  has stressed that the force must continue to make use of the National Police Air Service after the helicopter based at Wattisham is moved to the Midlands on Friday.

    It means the nearest one for Suffolk will be the one based at Boreham near Chelmsford.

    Darren Harris said: "We will need to be calling upon that helicopter.

    "We do pay for it, and it is a service that we do need in tackling crime and and finding those vulnerable missing people."

  5. Man, previously convicted of attempted murder, jailed again 20 years later published at 12:54 British Summer Time 30 March 2017

    A man has been jailed after pleading guilty to the false imprisonment of a 17-year-old girl, who he didn't know, in Lowestoft on New Year's Day.

    Wayne Clay, 53, formerly of Warren Road in the town, was given an extended eight-year sentence - three years imprisonment plus five years on licence - when he appeared at Ipswich Crown Court.

    It happened in Woods Loke West at about 02:15, when the teenager was walking home after celebrating New Year.

    She felt uneasy after noticing a man loitering in an alleyway, who walked up behind her as she turned to take a different route.

    Clay told her to be quiet, and grabbed her waist before pulling her into a driveway with such force that both of them fell to the ground.

    He fled after two members of the public who were driving by heard the victim screaming, and stopped to see what was happening.

    Police say Clay had previously been jailed for attempted murder in Royston in Hertfordshire in 1997.

    They might not be the exact "Shape of You" but if you fancy owning some items of clothing once belonging to Ed Sheeran then put this date in your diary. 

    On 13 April East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) will open a new shop in Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, and 20 items of clothing worn by the singer will be on sale. 

    If you can't make that date the charity says more items will be sold via an online auction site, external on 23 April.

    Lowestoft's RNLI crew launched 31 times in 2016, an increase of 29% on the figure of 24 for 2015.

    Overall, volunteer lifeboat crews from stations at Aldeburgh, Southwold and Lowestoft were launched 65 times last year.

    Coxswain at Lowestoft, John Fox, said one of the most serious incidents happened in August when four people were taken to hospital, after a speedboat crash at Oulton Broad.

    "The boat capsized. One guy swam ashore and the other guys were sitting on the upturned hull; they were quite fortunate really," he said.

    "As it happened there was no harm done, and no big deal, but at the time when they called and said 'there's five people in the water', it could have been very different."

    Ipswich Witches, external rider Rory Schlein has praised teammate Danyon Hume (pictured) ahead of tonight's home meeting against Berwick Bandits.

    The 20-year-old was named Rider of the Meeting in Saturday's victory over Sheffield Tigers, thanks to a hugely impressive 8+1 points.

    "He seems to listen as well which is hard to come across these days with young riders, who don't seem to listen," said Schlein. 

    "He's been taking everything in that myself and Danny (King) and Chris (Louis) have been saying. As the night went on he got quicker and he's definitely someone who's going to improve on his average."

    The Foxhall side will be keen to build on Saturday's Championship win over Sheffield Tigers and put themselves in a strong position for Saturday's second leg in Northumberland.

    "It’s nice to be riding again a few days after a good result and we can build some momentum,” team manager Ritchie Hawkins (pictured) told the Witches' website. 

    “We have got a week off after the Knockout Cup clashes with Berwick and we can’t afford any slip-ups.

  12. County set to lose police helicopterpublished at 08:42 British Summer Time 30 March 2017

    There will no longer be a police helicopter based at Wattisham army airbase from tomorrow, as part of cuts to the National Police Air Service, external  (NPAS).

    The nearest police helicopter will be based at Boreham near Chelmsford in Essex - about 70 miles from Lowestoft as the crow flies.

    Supt Jon Dodman, head of specialist operations at Suffolk Police, said: "I sought reassurance from NPAS that the service we receive here in Suffolk won't suffer as a result of that closure.

    "I shall be actively monitoring that service going forward, to ensure that that is the case."

  13. Kite surfer rescued by lifeboatpublished at 08:36 British Summer Time 30 March 2017

    Hunstanton lifeboat was launched to the rescue of a kite surfer who was drifting out to sea.

    The woman, from Suffolk, got into difficulty just before 11:00 yesterday, when she couldn't get her kite airborne and was drifting down tide towards Holme-next-the-Sea near Hunstanton.

    Her husband, who's also a kite surfer, raised the alarm and the RNLI crew went out to pull her from the water.

    The woman, who'd been in the water for 45 minutes, was treated by paramedics as she was showing signs of hypothermia.

    Ipswich Town, external fans will hear whether strikers David McGoldrick and Tom Lawrence are fit for the weekend when manager Mick McCarthy gives his pre-match press conference at lunchtime.

    The pair both missed out on international duty last week and could be doubtful for Saturday's Championship home game against Birmingham City.

    Fellow forward Kieffer Moore and left-back Myles Kenlock have also had injuries recently.
