  1. Simon Dobbin trial: Jury to resume deliberations for a fifth daypublished at 08:19 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

    Jurors are about to enter a fifth day of deliberations at the trial of 13 men accused of football hooliganism offences which left a Cambridge United fan with brain damage.

    Simon Dobbin, who lives in Mildenhall in Suffolk, was attacked by a group of men outside a pub near Southend United's ground in March 2015.

    He has been unable to walk or talk since.

    Thirteen men have been charged with conspiracy to commit violent disorder which they deny, while 12 have been charged with violent disorder, of which 11 pleaded not guilty, while one man admitted it.

    The jury retired to consider its verdicts on Monday afternoon and so far they've been discussing the verdicts for 14 hours.

    They are due back at Basildon Crown Court at 10:15.

    Great news for Leiston, external fans this morning after it was confirmed star striker Matt Blake's signed a new three-year deal at Victory Road.

    The 28-year-old scored an incredible 42 goals last season, and was said to be interesting clubs higher up the football pyramid.

    "It's a great club, surrounded by great people," Blake told BBC Suffolk Sport. "The football we play is frightening as far as I'm concerned, and I'm happy to be involved in that for the next three years."

    "This is massive," said manager Glenn Driver. "Not only for myself, but for Leiston as a whole because we haven't just signed a goalscorer, we've signed, in my opinion, the best striker at this level."

    An 18-year-old from Thorpe Morieux near Bury St Edmunds has launched a crowdfunding bid to raise money to fund his place at the London-based Arts Educational School, external from September.

    Tom Barber has raised more than £5,000 but needs more: "Getting into Arts Ed was the best thing that has ever happened to me, but I am still about £8,000 short per year and time is running out.

    “Having achieved so much, not being able to fulfil my dream of studying at Arts Ed would be devastating.”

    Tom appeared as a special guest for Ruthie Henshall and Her Band at the Theatre Royal, external in Bury St Edmunds.

    The West End star,who grew up in the county, said: "Tom is a great natural talent.

    "I am convinced that he will certainly go on from West Suffolk to the West End.

    "He deserves all the help he can get in order to reach his target.

    "His work ethic and passion is unquestionable."

    To encourage potential sponsors, Tom has put together various packages depending on how much is donated.

    Among the ‘rewards’ is a chance to have Tom act as a sing-a-gram, play at a summer function or even a free pair of tickets for all his future shows.

  8. Man arrested on suspicion of murderpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 13 July 2017

    A Felixstowe man been arrested on suspicion of murder, after a woman died at Ipswich Hospital this afternoon.

    Police were contacted late yesterday afternoon, after a woman, who was described as being "very unwell", was admitted to A&E.

    The woman, in her 40s, had been found on the floor at her home in Leeward Court in Felixstowe, where she is believed to have been for some time.

    Officers investigating the case arrested a 58-year-old man shortly afterwards on suspicion of GBH.

    This afternoon, following confirmation of the woman's death, the man was arrested on suspicion of murder, and is being questioned at the Martlesham Police Investigation Centre (pictured) about what happened.

    A cordon remains in place around the address, and inquiries continue.

    More than 2,500 arrests have been made in connection with drug crime in the county in the last two-and-a-half years, say police.

    Officers are now bringing together three separate anti-drugs operations under one name - "Velocity".

    Ch Supt Jenny Eves says it's not just the county town that's experiencing drug problems: "The supply of drugs that you've seen with some of the issues that you've got in Ipswich is mirrored elsewhere around the county.

    "It's no longer an issue just in the main county town and it hasn't been for quite some time.

    "We've got similar problems all over the county."

  11. Simon Dobbin attack trial: Jury sent home for daypublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 13 July 2017

    The jury in the trial of 13 men accused of attacking a Cambridge United football fan following a match against Southend United have been sent home for the day.

    The jury, which reconvened at 10:15 after a short day yesterday, has so far deliberated the verdicts for 14 hours.

    They are due to reconvene at Basildon Crown Court from 10:15 tomorrow.

    Simon Dobbin, from Mildenhall, has been unable to walk or talk since the attack in March 2015.

    Police say they're deploying "overtly armed" officers at the Latitude Festival, with the message: "Don't be scared, say hello".

    Det Supt David Cutler told us they're ensuring they've got the "appropriate number" of armed officers supporting the police and security operations.

    "This is part and parcel of large events nationally, events attracting large numbers of people and I hope the public see it as a reassurance and an added measure for them to really enjoy the weekend" he said.

    The brand-new £2m vessel is too tall for the A14, so instead has to take the back roads.

    It will be navigating the streets of central Cambridge later today, before heading into Suffolk tomorrow after an overnight stop.

    A team of people are on hand to remove traffic lights and telephone wires if the load is too large.

    League One club Portsmouth are close to completing the signing of Jersey-born striker Brett Pitman from Ipswich Town, BBC Radio Solent reports.

    The 29-year-old scored four goals for Mick McCarthy's side in the Championship last term.

  18. Newmarket's oldest race kicks off July Festivalpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 13 July 2017

    The annual July Festival, external begins at Newmarket today, starting with the Newmarket Town Plate, the town's oldest race.

    Amy Starkey, from Jockey Club Racecourses, said: "It was inaugurated in 1666 by King Charles II, a race that he himself said would be run forever.

    "It's an amazing part of our history - 15 amateur riders take to the turf and gallop their horses over three and three quarter miles, so it's a real test of endurance.

    "It's the longest race by quite a considerable margin that we stage here at Newmarket but also one would say, in a way, our most special race in that it's our oldest and [most] historic inaugurated by an act of parliament in 1666."

    Barn owls have been spotted nesting on the National Trust’s Ickworth Estate, external near Bury St Edmunds for the first time in over twenty years.

    Sean Reid, the trust's outdoors manager, said: "It’s incredibly exciting that we now have a family of barn owls at Ickworth, which were discovered by our ranger team on the edge of the estate.

    "We know there are three owlets and we’ve already spotted some eggs in the nesting box and hope this will be the perfect place for them to live."
