  18. Council should 'represent the people of Suffolk'published at 12:16 British Summer Time 11 July 2017

The leader of the Labour group at Suffolk County Council says she's concerned about the lack of diversity among fellow councillors, saying: "We just don't get the ethnic representation, we don't get the gender balance, we don't get the age representation that we need to truly represent the people of Suffolk."

    Endeavour House

Sandra Gage said: "Often it's very difficult for young people, people who've got carer's responsibilities, people who need to work to pay their rent or pay a mortgage to actually take the time out of what would be a working day to undertake this role hence we have predominantly in Suffolk a high proportion of retired white men in our county council.

"That's not in any way a rude comment, it's a fact."

Her comments come as an independent board suggests the leader gets a £5,000 pay increase, and other senior cabinet members should get an extra £2,000, while other county councillors who don't have extra responsibilities won't get any increase.

The proposals will be voted on by councillors next week.
