Kesgrave is a small town on the edge of Ipswich that has grown rapidly over the past 20 years. It has two primary schools and a high school and is packed with families.

I've been to the scene of the shooting, in the heart of the town's Grange Farm estate, and the sense of shock about what's happened is palpable.

This is a tight-knit community where many people know and look out for each other.

The police have reassured people that this is an "isolated incident" but the feeling of concern remains.

Areas are cordoned off as a student is seriously injured on his way to school.

Pictures from the BBC helicopter show a more detailed look of the cordon currently in place on the scene in Kesgrave, where police were called to this morning.

The local MP, Dan Poulter, has said he was "dismayed to learn of the serious incident".

The MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich said: "My thoughts are with the young person and their family.

"It would not be appropriate for me to comment further at this stage but I am confident that the Suffolk Police will be robust and thorough in their resolve to fully investigate what has taken place and bring any perpetrators to justice.”

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Jones said there would be more officers on patrol and appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

He concluded by asking members of the public to avoid the areas of Friends Walk, Through Jollys and Ropes Drive.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Jones told the media: "Understandably, the community in Kesgrave, particularly in the Grange Farm area, will be extremely shocked and concerned.

"Furthermore, it is inevitable parents across Ipswich may also be anxious following this morning's incident.

"I would reassure the public that our priority is to keep everyone safe and incidents such as this are extremely rare in Suffolk."

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder shortly before 11:00 and is in custody at Suffolk police headquarters at Martlesham.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Jones said he believed "there is nothing to suggest there is wider threat to the public".

The 15-year-old victim has been taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, where he is receiving what police called "urgent medical treatment" for serious injuries.

Assistant Chief Constable Jones said: "We are currently providing support to the boy's family."

Suffolk Police Assistant Chief Constable Rob Jones has told the media the teenager arrested earlier today in relation to the shooting is being held on suspicion of attempted murder.

Phil Bennett, 38, of East Bergholt, told the PA news agency that his father lives near to the scene in Kesgrave and heard a gunshot.

"He's a retired paramedic - he's heard a lot of gunshots in his time, so he stayed indoors," he said.

"The next thing he knew there were police piling in, then it's a scene of crime.

"It's hard to believe this has happened 100m (328ft) from my mum's front door, that someone's been shot. It's terrible what's going on."

The Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson, has spoken in the House of Commons about the shooting of the 15-year-old boy in Kesgrave this morning.

He said: "I think we're all shocked and saddened to learn about the incident in which a young person was seriously hurt on their way to school in Suffolk today.

"Our thoughts are very much with the young person, their family and the whole school community at this very difficult time."

Police have confirmed their activity in Westwood Avenue in Ipswich is connected to the shooting nearly six miles away in Kesgrave.

Kesgrave High School, where the 15-year-old boy attended, has said they are continuing to work with the police over the shooting.

They added that "students and staff are safe in school and will remain in school as expected until the end of the school day, at 15:20".

"In order to provide reassurance to the school community there will be a police presence as students leave school today and over the next few days," the school statement added.

Suffolk Police have arranged a press call near the scene of the shooting, where Assistant Chief Constable Rob Jones will read a statement to members of the media at 15:00.

We will bring you updates from that as soon as we get them.

Local resident Andy Watts told BBC Look East he was walking his dog near the area and "heard a gunshot and then I heard a great big scream".

"That's all I can say. It was a quick as that. It sounded like scaffolding falling down originally because it was a big, big crash," he said.

"I saw them working on the young lad over on the green, he was over there for quite a while, while they were attending to him, a lot of ambulance staff and paramedics working on him."

Police officers are stood at the entrance to Westwood Avenue in Ipswich, which has been cordoned off.

A police helicopter is also flying above head around the Valley Road area.

It has not been confirmed yet whether this is linked to the shooting in Kesgrave.
