  1. Deepcut 'like a clogged sausage machine'published at 14:27 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

The coroner has described how there were far too few officers to train and look after young soldiers who were left bored and indisciplined.

He said: "While some intermittent training was provided, there were too few permanent staff to deliver it and put into place a structured regime."

And one witness told the inquest Deepcut was like a "sausage machine that had become clogged".

The coroner has said Pte James appeared to have been "unhappy in the army" and often spoke with friends and other recruits about wanting to leave.

On one occasion she was fined £50 for the negligent discharge of a rifle, and for a time rang home a lot to say she was homesick.

But the inquest heard that when Pte James left initial training at Pirbright she was a "poster for the Army".

  4. Sex assault claim 'assumption or fantasy'published at 14:06 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

    Paul Heaney
    BBC News reporter

The coroner has ruled a claim that Pte James was sexually assaulted while at Deepcut "at highest was assumption, at its lowest was fantasy".

Squaddie Mark Beard had said Pte James was ordered by Sgt Gavaghan to have sex with another soldier, Ian Atkinson, on the night before she died - but the claim was strongly denied by both men.

Mr Barker said: "I find Pte Beard's allegation to be wholly without foundation."

  5. Boyfriend not a suspectpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

On the morning Pte James died, Pte Paul Wilkinson - one of the two men in the love triangle - saw the teenager while she was on guard duty to give her an "ultimatum" to choose between the men.

The inquest heard Pte James told him she wanted to be with him, and he left happy - believing she was fine.

Mr Barker has ruled he did not consider Pte Wilkinson a suspect in her death.

  6. 'Caught in love triangle'published at 13:47 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

Cheryl James was caught in a love triangle at the time of her death.

The 18-year-old had been in a relationship with Royal Engineer Simeon Carr-Minns, but started another relationship with another squaddie at Deepcut, Paul Wilkinson - and both men wanted an exclusive relationship with her.

The inquest heard both men were upset and Pte James was criticised and labelled a "slag" by some - but she did not appear overly upset. Rather, she was unhappy and upset by the situation.

  8. Women 'seen as sexual challenge'published at 13:30 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

The coroner has said the Army accepted some instructors "saw young females as a sexual challenge".

He said evidence from the inquest "supports the presence of consensual but improper relations between instructors and trainees".

  9. 'No foundation' for rape claimpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

The coroner has said an allegation that Pte James was raped the night before her death is "wholly without foundation".

  10. Sergeant made Pte James crypublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

There was evidence that a sergeant, Andrew Gavaghan, (pictured) shouted at Pte James and made her cry, the coroner has said.

But amid suggestions of bullying, Mr Barker said it was likely that if the incident with Sgt Gavaghan bore any major relevance then others would have come forward, but none did.

He also said there was no evidence Pte James had spoken to or written to any friends about the encounter with him, and there was no evidence it had later played on her mind in November 1995.

  11. Lack of female officerspublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

Coroner Brian Barker QC has launched a scathing attack on welfare standards at Deepcut.

He criticised the lack of female officers - which the inquest heard was an Army-wide problem - and the lack of welfare officers and support structures. He said the "haphazard provision of welfare support was insufficient".

  13. 'Sexualised atmosphere'published at 12:52 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

The coroner found overwhelming evidence of Deepcut's "sexualised" atmosphere and said given the "dearth" of structured life for trainees, it was not surprising they turned to each other for stimulation.

He said while sexual relations were not prohibited between trainees, the extent to which they were able to have sex was "inappropriate".

  15. 'Sexual relations at barracks'published at 12:35 British Summer Time 3 June 2016

    Tanya Gupta
    BBC News Online

The coroner finds no basis in evidence that Pte Cheryl James was "somehow sexualised" but says more should have been done about sexual relations at Deepcut.

Brian Barker QC said given the lurid media interest in Cheryl James "There is no basis in the evidence that the army or the MoD somehow sexualised her". He added that the "MoD accepts more should have been done re: sexual relations between NCOs & trainees. Many had little experience dealing with young women"

Pte Sean Benton was the first of the four soldiers to die at Deepcut. He was found with five gunshot wounds in June 1995 while on guard at a perimeter fence.
