    The inquest began in February and has taken evidence from 109 people including nine expert witnesses.

    At the start of the hearing, Coroner Brian Barker QC promised a full, frank and fearless investigation into the teenager's death.

    Surrey Police has apologised to the family of Cheryl James over questioning by their barrister during the inquest.

    In a statement, the force said: "The new inquest was the direct result of the understandable campaign by the family of Private Cheryl James to seek answers to how Private James died.

    "They have shown admirable resilience throughout their long search for answers.

    "Any additional stress caused to the family during the inquest was not intentional and we apologise for any ways they feel Surrey Police made the experience worse."

    The Army said she had killed herself but a first inquest recorded an open verdict.

    This second inquest in Woking was ordered after High Court judges quashed the original findings.
