A top rump steak and stilton pie has claimed the top prize in the 2020 British Pie Awards.

Last year a vegan pie - a curried sweet potato and butternut squash pie specifically - rose above the rest to triumph.

Nearly 900 pies were entered into the competition but the Supreme Champion prize was claimed by Turner's Pies Ltd.

The family-run bakery in Chichester, West Sussex, also won the competition in 2018.

Chief judge Colin Woodhead said their steak and stilton pie had "an attractive appearance".

He complimented the pastry for its "crunchy rich texture" and described the filling as "well-balanced" between meat and cheese.

A British Gas engineer who stole a £16,000 Rolex watch from a primary school teacher while he was installing a smart meter has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Cameron Beard, 26, took the watch before chatting to owner Carolyn Walker, 59, in her Uckfield home "like he didn't have a care in the world", Lewes Crown Court was told.

Bead then took the watch to a jewellers where he sold it for £3,000, the jury heard.

Mrs Walker said: "I was completely blindsided by the theft. I had owned it for almost 19 years."

Beard, of Keats Avenue in Rehill, Surrey, who had pleaded guilty to the theft at an earlier hearing, was handed an eight-month suspended sentence and ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay £2,000 compensation to Mrs Walker.

Two hundred tonnes of waste were engulfed in flames at a household waste recycling site during the night.

Dramatic pictures showed enormous flames and smoke rising from the scene at Westhampnett near Chichester.

Four fire engines were sent to battle the blaze after the fire started at about 18:00 GMT on Monday. Residents were told to keep windows and doors closed.

Smoke spread south east and would have been visible from the A27, West Sussex Fire & Rescue said.

The fire was eventually brought under control, with one crew remaining at the scene overnight.
