A 76-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving after a 10-year-old cyclist was seriously injured in a crash in West Chiltington, near Pulborough, in West Sussex.

The boy was hit by a Renault Twingo in Church Street at about 22:20 BST on Tuesday and was taken to hospital with serious arm, shoulder, leg and hip injuries, Sussex Police said.

The driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, driving while unfit through drugs, failing to stop at the scene of a collision, and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, a police spokesman said.

Police are appealing for any witnesses, or drivers with dash cam footage to contact them.

Brighton & Hove City Council has increased the city’s Covid alert level from yellow to amber - the last stage before the government can declare a city an area of national concern.

In the week up to 1 October there were 115 confirmed new Covid-19 cases, up from 39 in the week before.

Alistair Hill, director of public health, said: “It’s really concerning the number of cases has more than doubled over the past week.

"If transmission keeps increasing we risk the government imposing more restrictions on the city".

He said the rise was partly explained by an increase in testing in the city but "this does not explain all the increase".

He asked everyone to "make extra efforts or risk a local lockdown".

Joe Mitchell, area lifesaving manager for the RNLI, said: "Our lifeguards at Camber have had a busy summer with coronavirus restrictions meaning more people than ever have been holidaying at home, so having them there for an extra month, particularly during what can be a busy half-term is fantastic news."
