  8. Southern: Hourly trains to be reinstated on Seaford branchpublished at 19:03 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Ben Weisz
    Political reporter, BBC Sussex

"It's a bit annoying to be honest." Surely something of an understatement from one Seaford-bound commuter I chatted to at Lewes nearly a month ago, during the last rail strike.

Another didn't mince his words. "It's a total mess".

Now, after nearly two months of bus replacements that saw the Seaford branch fall completely silent, commuters are cautiously welcoming the reinstatement of hourly trains from the end of this month.

The local MP Maria Caulfield says she'll be keeping her eye on Southern to make sure they deliver.

With another rail strike about to get underway, so too will passengers.

The Brighton MP said voters want candidates who have policies in common to be "a bit wiser" at elections.

But her neighbouring Hove MP told her there were "red lines that your voters would not cross" and that voters would see an "Establishment stitch-up".

  19. Lunchtime report: Leicestershire v Sussexpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Adrian Harms
    Reporting live for BBC Sussex

    Cricket pitch

A tough morning for Leicestershire after Sussex decided to bowl first under cloudy skies and a greenish looking pitch, which has made for favourable bowling conditions.

Steve Magoffin took a wicket with the first ball of the match having Paul Horton caught behind, but thereafter the Sussex bowling failed to exploit the conditions as Dexter and Robson completed a solid 50 partnership.

However Robson was bowled by one that kept horribly low, and the ever reliable Magoffin trapped Leics skipper Cosgrove for four runs.

Neil Dexter has shown sound technique, mixing watchful defence with some classic cover drives, and he may well benefit if the forecast sun arrives and batting gets easier.
