    The second stage of coastal protection works are due to start on the seafront in Hastings this week.

    To help keep the beach in place and to protect the sea wall,  two new rock groynes will be constructed along the Carlisle Parade frontage.

    Added to this, rocks will be moved from the harbour arm area and a new set of timber access steps to the beach will be installed.

    He's pledged one million new homes by 2020, and from a new fund to help developers to fast-tracking construction on publicly-owned sites, measures announced today are a start.

    But they don't come close to the target. Difficult, radical ideas are needed in a forthcoming Government Bill. New towns? Green belt building? It's got to be big, whatever it is.

    But as we've seen from Lancing to Hassocks those radical options will likely be met with fighting by communities vehemently opposed to large scale development.
