  17. Lucas: 'Ministers must be held to account'published at 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    Caroline Lucas

Brighton Pavilion MP and Green Party co-leader, Caroline Lucas, says the Coperforma saga shows a need for new powers for the health regulators.

    Quote Message

This service should never have been outsourced to the private sector in the first place and patients and staff will be relieved that at last there is a plan to bring the service back into the NHS.

    Quote Message

There are some very grave questions to be asked about how it was possible for a fleet of 30 ambulances to be run without a licence during the summer. Ministers must be held to account for this appalling patient transport scandal that has gone on for 7 months. I believe we may need new powers from Parliament to give the regulators the teeth to stop this happening again."

  18. Coperforma: 'It's been a long time coming'published at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    Ben Weisz
    Political reporter, BBC Sussex

    Ambulance

1st April 2017. Put it in your diary. That’s when the South Central Ambulance Service will formally take over Sussex’s beleaguered patient transport service from Coperforma.

For some, it’s been a long time coming. Delays for patients and drivers’ frustrations with awkward technology seemingly abating, only to be replaced by serious concerns about some of the ambulance firms Coperforma hired to transport its patients.

When news broke this morning, it took some at Coperforma by surprise. But I understand its management has signed off on the transfer.

That transfer will be gradual, over a period of months. Unions, MPs and patients alike will be watching closely, hoping it is far smoother than it was this spring.
