  10. ICYMI: Brighton budget updatepublished at 18:01 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    Ben Weisz
    Political reporter, BBC Sussex

When we reported on Brighton and Hove City Council's draft budget proposals in December, the more astute among you will have noticed they had a gap.

Though the council said £24m of savings were needed to balance the books - they had thus far only found £21m of them.

Well, a new draft, external from the Labour administration proposes a way of closing that gap.

They'll take advantage of new powers to raise your council tax 5%, not 4%. That adds about £81 to your bill instead of £55 if you're a Band D taxpayer - but raises about £1.2m for the council. A further £1.2m comes from a new adult social care grant from the Government.

£800,000 more comes thanks to a larger base of taxpayers than previously thought.

Council tax could rise nearly 5% next year in Brighton and Hove

There aren't any extra cuts we didn't know about back in December- though the full implications of those proposals are still being worked out.

It'll take some persuading to win over the opposition -  nothing is set in stone until the whole package is voted on at a special council meeting on 23 February.
