Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision in Haywards Heath, in which a 78-year-old female pedestrian sustained serious injuries and later died.

It happened at around 17:20 GMT on Friday in South Road and led to the road, part of the B2272, being closed to traffic while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The collision involved a grey Nissan Qashqai travelling south, driven by a 70-year-old woman from Plumpton, and the pedestrian, who was from Ardingly.

The pedestrian had earlier been driving a white Nissan Note which was parked at the kerb while she got out to cross the road.

She was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, for emergency treatment where she died. The Qashqai driver was unhurt.

The 60-year-old victim from St Leonards died in hospital.

A 24-year-old man from Horsham suffered serious head injuries after a crash in the town at 01:50 GMT on Sunday.

It happened in Redford Avenue when a red Citroen Saxo car crashed into a parked Volkswagen Touran which then hit a parked Volkswagen Transporter.

The man was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where he is in a stable condition. There were no other injuries. 

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk, quoting Operation Goldsmith.

Daryll Rowe will go on trial in June, accused of grievous bodily harm and attempted GBH.

One of two men assaulted in Hastings on Friday morning has died.

Officers were called to Havelock Road just before 01:00 GMT after the victims, a 60-year-old and a 53-year-old, were found near the taxi rank with serious injuries.

Brian Hill, 60, from St Leonards was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where he died on Saturday.

The other victim, who is also from St Leonards, remains in a stable condition in another hospital.

Two men, a 24-year-old from Rye and a 21-year-old from Hastings, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and bailed until 21 March pending further enquiries.

Two men have admitted their roles in an acid attack at a cinema which left the victim scarred for life. 

Shop worker Samir Hussain was attacked when Michael McPherson threw sulphuric acid in his face outside Cineworld in Crawley, West Sussex.

Mr Hussain, who works in Tunbridge Wells, still wears a mask 18 months on, Brighton magistrates' court heard.

Lee Bates, who was with McPherson at the time, was sentenced after admitting common assault, and McPherson, who admitted GBH, will be sentenced later.

Mr Hussain's ordeal began when he and a friend, Yasir Khan, left a late-night showing of the film Straight Outta Compton at the complex in August 2015.

The court heard that they were approached outside the cinema by Bates and McPherson, who told them: "You've seen a gangster movie; you can see gangsters now."

Steven Talbot Hadley, prosecuting, said Mr Hussain was punched by both men before McPherson retrieved a bottle of acid from his car and threw it in his face.

Mr Hussain, 28, suffered severe burns to his face, neck and right arm.

He has since had a number of skin grafts and still wears a protective mask.

This week she's starring in the 1930s thriller "Gaslight" at Brighton's Theatre Royal.

Here are some facts you may not know about her.

The number of patients on hospital wards in England has been at unsafe levels at nine out of 10 NHS trusts this winter, BBC analysis shows.

To minimise the risk of infections and delays in getting treatment, hospitals are meant to have no more than 85% of beds occupied.

But the analysis showed 137 out of 152 hospital trusts have been above that level since the start of December.
