    Seagulls

Lucy has been in touch and says we are lucky to have a healthy population.

Seagulls are part of living by the sea. Herring gulls are globally in decline like the vast majority of species that human beings are managing to annihilate at alarming speed. We should consider ourselves lucky to have a healthy population in Brighton and we should stop being so utterly selfish when a species manages to do well by considering them an inconvenience or vermin.

  18. Spending cuts and an extra 4.99% in council tax agreed for East Sussexpublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    Ben Weisz
    Political reporter, BBC Sussex

£17m of further spending cuts and a council tax rise have been agreed by East Sussex county councillors at a meeting today.

Labour and Lib Dems didn't dispute those aims, but did table amendments about where the axe should fall.

They said Conservative plans relied too heavily on savings from a partnership with the NHS, and did too little for vulnerable residents or council employees.

But ultimately, with support from UKIP and the odd independent councillor, the Tory budget was carried 25 votes to 15.
